Personal Profile
Member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences; Professor at UCSF; Scientific Advisor to Shuimu Future Sciences. Cheng Yifan was admitted to the Department of Physics at Wuhan University in 1978, where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He received his Ph.D. from the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in 1991, and subsequently conducted postdoctoral research in Norway and Germany. In 1996, he transitioned into the field of structural biology, continuing his postdoctoral work in the United States and Japan. He joined Harvard Medical School in 1999. In 2006, he moved to the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), as an Assistant Professor. He was granted tenure in 2012. In 2015, he became an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2019 and to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 2020.
