Spine Health Innovation Development Forum: Navigating the Blue Ocean of Spinal Rehabilitation and Winning the Industry Breakthrough

Mar 29, 2023 09:00 CST Updated 09:00

In recent years, issues such as uneven shoulders, kyphosis, forward head posture, and even scoliosis have become increasingly common among adolescents. Spinal health problems in children and adolescents have emerged as a prominent new public health concern in China. Among these, “scoliosis” is a common disabling deformity in adolescents, characterized by abnormal alignment of the spinal vertebrae in the coronal, sagittal, and axial planes, with an insidious onset. Without timely intervention, scoliosis can lead to mild deformities of the trunk and thoracic cage, or, in severe cases, cause damage to the spinal cord and spinal nerves, resulting in respiratory and cardiac dysfunction.

Based on a prevalence rate of 5% in statistical data, approximately 10 million children and adolescents in China are affected by scoliosis. Early detection, prevention, and treatment constitute the expert consensus on the prevention and control of scoliosis in children and adolescents. Since 2019, abnormal spinal curvature has been included as an indicator in the national monitoring program for common student health problems and health-influencing factors. In the "Opinions on Comprehensively Strengthening and Improving School Hygiene and Health Education in the New Era," issued by five departments including the Ministry of Education in 2021, spinal health examinations were explicitly incorporated into the physical examination items for primary and secondary school students.

However, scoliosis prevention and control is a systematic project that requires concerted efforts from all sectors. Beyond schools and families, the entire society must take action to establish a new, integrated national prevention and control system for student spinal curvature, featuring a multi-pronged approach encompassing “health education, screening, diagnosis and treatment, rehabilitation, and monitoring.”

From the perspective of the Chinese market, patient needs remain far from being adequately met. Although the long-term outlook is promising, a closer examination of the Chinese market reveals substantial challenges and tests. Whether it pertains to health awareness among patients and their families, scarcity of hospital resources, innovation in corporate technology and product R&D, or the urgent need for supportive policies, the path to breakthroughs in the spinal health industry remains arduous and lengthy. Key issues that innovators must address include how to win the battle in the scoliosis rehabilitation revolution, how to genuinely shift public perception and bias, and what technological innovations will introduce new variables into the market.
