March 28,HeadChina Green Bio-Manufacturing Summit(hereinafter referred to as CGBMS) was successfully held in Guangzhou. The summit was organized byScience and Technology DailyandChinese Society for BiotechnologyCo-organized by,Guangzhou Municipal People's GovernmentwithPeople's Government of Haizhu District, Guangzhou CitySupport,Taichuang Biotechnology (Guangzhou) Co., Ltd.Organized by. This is an industry grand event jointly initiated by central media and the “industry-academia-research-application” ecosystem, bringing together over 400 guests from government, academia, and industry, with invitedGao Fu, Deng Zixin, Yuan Yingjin, Zheng Yuguo, Song ErweiAcademicians and experts delivered keynote addresses, while attendees exchanged views on how to seize the major opportunities presented by synthetic biology, leverage technological innovation to open up new fields and tracks for development, and continuously cultivate new drivers and advantages for growth.VCBeat,VCBeat participated in selected sessions of the summit.

As an emerging strategic industrial technology, synthetic biology is bringing disruptive changes to socio-economic development through a novel approach to creation, and has become a primary arena for technological competition among major powers. In recent years, thanks to factors such as technological breakthroughs and policy support,Breakthrough Advances in Synthetic Biology, widely used inHealthcare, Green Energy, Daily Chemicals & Cosmetics, Bio-based Materials, Food & Consumer Goodsand other fields. According to McKinsey data, it is projected that by 2025,The Economic Value of Synthetic Biology and Biomanufacturing Will Reach $100 Billion, 60% of global material production could be achieved through biomanufacturing in the future.
In his address, Gao Fu, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chairman of the Chinese Society for Biotechnology, stated that synthetic biology is ushering in a historic opportunity for development with broad prospects. It is rapidly advancing toward practical application and industrialization, playing a unique role in areas such as carbon peaking and carbon neutrality (“dual carbon” goals), biomaterials, bioinformatics, and artificial intelligence. As a critical frontier in the science and technology development strategies of major global powers, synthetic biology holds significant strategic importance for transforming China’s economic growth model in related industries and achieving green, sustainable industrial development.
Academician Deng Zixin, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Microbial Metabolism at the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Academician Yuan Yingjin, Professor at Tianjin University and member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Academician Zheng Yuguo, Professor at Zhejiang University of Technology and member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Academician Song Erwei, Dean of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital at Sun Yat-sen University and member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; and Zhang Zhiqian, Founder and CEO of Taita Biotech (Guangzhou) Co., Ltd., along with other academicians and industry guests, respectively addressed at the summit on"Leveraging Synthetic Biology to Drive Disruptive Innovation in Health Technology," "Synthesis and Application of Yeast Genomes," "Biomanufacturing: An Advanced Model for Material Transformation," "Exploration and Future of Platform-Based Development in Synthetic Biology"and other topics, deliver keynote addresses.

At the conference, the organizers, together with government representatives, academic institutions, and industry stakeholders, jointly launched the “Synthetic Biology Application Innovation Research Platform,” aiming to further advance applied research in green biomanufacturing, represented by synthetic biology, and promote the industrial translation of scientific achievements.

At the same time, the summit unveiled"2022 Research Report on Green Applications and Industry Perception of Synthetic Biology in China", by means of questionnaire surveys, data analysis, and industry case studies, we comprehensively review and summarize the development history, as well as the challenges and opportunities, of China’s synthetic biology industry. Additionally, we select ten representative application cases to promote the healthy, stable, and positive development of the industry through the recognition of exemplary cases.
