Nutrition Science Innovation Development Forum: Advancing Original R&D to Empower the 'New Health' Consumption Upgrade

Mar 29, 2023 10:00 CST Updated 10:00

In recent years, the living standards of the Chinese people have continued to rise, nutritional supply capacity has significantly strengthened, and public awareness of nutrition has gradually increased, leading to marked improvements in the nutritional and health status of the population. Results from successive national nutrition and health surveillance surveys also indicate that issues of undernutrition and physical growth among Chinese residents have been continuously improving. However, due to imbalanced socioeconomic development, population aging, and unhealthy dietary patterns, China’s population still faces challenges such as the coexistence of nutritional deficiencies and excesses, the need for improvement in dietary habits and lifestyles, and a high prevalence of nutrition-related diseases in certain groups. With the successive release of the “Healthy China 2030” Planning Outline and the National Nutrition Plan (2017–2030), the CPC Central Committee and the State Council have attached great importance to nutritional health and national nutrition initiatives. Government authorities have introduced multiple policies related to special foods, accelerating market development and creating substantial room for growth in the nutrition market.

In 2022, frontier research in nutritional science achieved breakthrough progress. The current domestic market is vast, yet there is a demand for functional foods with clearly defined benefits. Therefore, we should fully leverage the unique advantages of developing nutritional products over pharmaceuticals: lower investment, shorter development cycles, and less stringent technical requirements.Based on this, the 7th Future Healthcare Top 100 Conference, in collaboration withWeilai Capital"Host"Forum on Innovative Development in Nutritional Sciences, and invite resources from all parties, including nutritionists, leading enterprises, investors, and researchers, to start from the source, link every part of the nutrition industry chain, and promote scientific research and development, production, and application, contributing to the implementation of the Healthy China strategy.

I.Forum Highlights:

(1)Frontier Trends: The Nutrition Science Sector—No Construction Without Destruction

“Like many other countries and regions, China is facing the immense challenge of population aging, with the social and economic burden caused by health conditions becoming increasingly severe,” said Bian Zhenjia, President of the China Nutrition and Health Food Association. He emphasized that building a Healthy China requires a fundamental shift from “disease treatment” to “health prevention.” Rapid social progress, high-speed economic development, and consumers’ continued attention to their own health status have led to growing market demand for nutritional and health food products. The nutrition and health industry has become a mainstream track for investment and financing. Many new consumer brands are actively entering the nutritional and health food sector, and the influx of capital has provided broader commercial space for market brands and products to break through.

(II)Technological Innovation: Product Power Driven by Original R&D Innovation

In 2022, frontier research in nutritional science achieved breakthrough progress. Bycomb’s Institute of Nutrition and Health, in collaboration with multiple authoritative institutions, spent seven years developing Lactobacillus paracasei LPB27, a high-quality strain derived from the gut of infants in Healthy China. Jiangnan University, Yashili Group, and other entities jointly completed research on “Key Technologies for Enzymatic Synthesis of Structured Lipid MLCT and Novel OPO and Their Application in Infant Formula,” establishing an industrial production line and achieving large-scale production of MLCT structured lipids and novel OPO structured lipids. Qingdao Chenlan Biotechnology Co., Ltd. conducted multiple preclinical and clinical studies on its patented branded ingredient, EuBone EQ®. After rigorous review by the U.S. FDA, this ingredient officially obtained New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) status. Starting from original research and technology, the forum showcased the scientific strength of high-quality nutritional products and breakthrough achievements in the industry, contributing greater momentum to the sector.

(3)Practical Application: Performance Outcomes and Cross-Disciplinary Integration

Currently, nutritional health science is ushering in a fourth-generation upgrade trend oriented toward “medical nutrition,” evolving from merely “eating enough” to “eating well,” then to “balanced nutrition,” and finally to the expectation that nutritional management will play a greater medical role. The innovative integration of technology and nutrition is an inevitable choice for continuously achieving product iteration and upgrades to meet diverse consumer demands. Under the broader trend of cross-sector integration, technological innovations are emerging endlessly, profoundly influencing the development of nutritional science and technology. The forum establishes an innovative platform and bridge, inviting nutritionists, leading enterprises, investors, researchers, and other stakeholders to jointly explore the development and innovation of the nutritional health sector, thereby better leveraging technology to serve economic development and the construction of a Healthy China.
