Forum on Clinical Applications of Interdisciplinary Medical Device Technologies: Seeking Breakthroughs Amid Industry Boom

Apr 04, 2023 20:39 CST Updated 20:39

MedicineThe innovative development of medical devices is directly related to the level of public health protection. In 2022, the market size of China's medical device industry is expected to reach 958.2 billion yuan.RMB 100 million, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 17.5% over the past seven years, it has surged to become the world’s second-largest market after the United States. The Chinese medical device industry is expected to maintain its rapid growth momentum, with the market size projected to reach RMB 1,244.7 billion by 2025.

The market size is substantial, yet there remains a significant gap between China and developed countries in terms of industrial development level and innovation capacity. In certain fields, medical devices are still dominated by imported products, and breakthroughs in key “chokepoint” technologies require continuous efforts. As a strategic emerging industry characterized by multidisciplinary integration, knowledge intensity, and high value-added, the medical device sector relies on technological innovation as the key driver for sustainable development. Collaboration among industry, academia, research institutions, and healthcare providers is a strategic measure to accelerate industry innovation, facilitate the translation of scientific and technological achievements, and enhance the competitiveness of products and enterprises. It is also an inevitable path for the high-end development of China’s medical device industry.

Therefore, the rapid development of the medical device sector hinges on the construction of an innovation ecosystem. This entails active participation from multiple stakeholders—including universities, enterprises, R&D institutions, and healthcare providers—to foster interdisciplinary integration between medicine and engineering. Such collaboration promotes the deep convergence of production, education, research, and clinical application in the medical device industry, thereby providing essential technological reserves and innovative vitality for industrial growth.

Currently, through the joint efforts of diverse market participants, China’s medical device industry has initiated a sustainable model for collaborative innovation across industry, academia, and research. While local governments emphasize the industrial leadership and scale effects of large enterprises, they should also support innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), actively promote integrated cooperation among large, medium, and small businesses, leverage capital resources along with the manufacturing and channel advantages of large corporations, and supplement these efforts with national preferential policies for the registration and procurement of innovative products. These measures will accelerate the industrialization of innovative products from all parties, thereby truly steering China’s medical device industry toward an autonomous, high-end, and innovation-driven future.

To promote the collaborative innovation and development among China’s medical device industry, academia, research institutions, and healthcare providers, the 7th Future Healthcare 100 Conference was jointly organized with Proxima Ventures.Forum on the Clinical Application of Interdisciplinary Technologies in Medical Devices, focusing on hot topics such as industry trends, innovative applications, and interdisciplinary collaboration, to provide effective support for technological innovation in the medical device sector, thereby facilitating resource and technology sharing, promoting new breakthroughs in medical device technologies, and creating new value.
