Medical nutrition in China is a sunrise industry. Although it started later than in developed countries such as those in Europe and the United States, it has experienced rapid development and holds immense growth potential. The first food for special medical purposes (FSMP) was launched in the United States in 1957, and in 1972, FSMPs were reclassified from prescription drugs to food products. This shift has given rise to industry giants such as Nestlé, Nutricia, Fresenius Kabi, and Abbott. China issued its first policy related to FSMPs in 2010, and in 2015, FSMPs were reclassified from drugs to food. Previously, because they were regulated as pharmaceuticals, some foreign products with long histories of use and proven efficacy were unable to enter the Chinese market due to their inability to meet drug registration and approval requirements.Driven by multiple factors, including supportive Chinese policies, the development of clinical nutrition departments, and the aging population in China, the medical nutrition sector in China is poised for substantial market expansion and significant growth potential in the future.
Methuselah is among the first companies in China to enter the field of foods for special medical purposes (FSMP), with the aspiration of becoming a century-old, distinguished enterprise in the realm of medical nutrition.Methuselah has completed its first decade in the field of medical nutrition. The period from 2012 to 2014 marked the exploration phase, during which its core product, Yusu, was launched and the Shanghai market was deeply cultivated. From 2015 to 2017, the company entered the development phase, expanding the full Yusu product line nationwide and launching DGI diabetic food products as well as calorie-controlled weight management foods. Between 2018 and 2023, Methuselah focused on the R&D and regulatory approval of Foods for Special Medical Purpose (FSMP), securing approvals for multiple FSMP products.Methuselah holds a significant first-mover advantage in China’s medical nutrition sector. In terms of sales channels, the company has established a dual presence in both hospital and consumer (C-end) markets. Its direct-to-hospital model has been refined over several years, achieving the number one market share in Shanghai and entering more than 500 hospitals nationwide. Consumer-side sales have surpassed RMB 100 million, with comprehensive coverage across e-commerce platforms, supermarkets, and live-streaming channels. Many top-tier live-stream influencers and key account (KA) supermarket chains have proactively sought partnerships with Methuselah. Looking ahead, the company will further expand its consumer market presence.
Regarding this round of financing, Tang Liming, Founder of Methuselah, stated, “Medical nutrition is the Tesla of the broader healthcare sector. It is the mission of everyone at Methuselah to make medical nutrition universally accessible. We are particularly eager to collaborate with outstanding industry talents and premier investment funds to create value for consumers worldwide. The successful partnership between Methuselah and Jinding Capital was primarily driven by our shared values. Jinding is an investment firm characterized by a strong spirit of striving; its team’s entrepreneurial mindset, professionalism, and dedication left a deep impression on me. Jinding truly stands out as an exceptional boutique investment institution. We look forward to a long-term collaboration with Jinding Capital, fostering mutual growth and propelling our respective healthcare initiatives to new heights.”
The project leader at Jinding Capital stated:“Two years ago, our team began focusing on and actively positioning itself in industries related to the middle-aged and elderly population. Based on our research into patients with chronic diseases, we identified Methuselah. We believe that a high-quality medical nutrition company must simultaneously possess medical attributes (authority), nutritional attributes (efficacy), and food attributes (consumer appeal), and”Methuselah is an extremely rare enterprise in the industry with such comprehensive capabilities.“During our exchanges with the Methuselah team, we found them to be true evangelists for medical nutrition. Their passion for the field, long-term commitment, and philosophy of creating social value by solving societal problems left a deep impression. Jinding also hopes to contribute to China’s medical nutrition industry by leveraging its accumulated experience in consumer healthcare.”
Liu Yang, Founding Partner of Jinding Capital, stated:“Jinding Capital is highly optimistic about the big health industry and hopes to collaborate with more partners and allies to build Jinding’s big health enterprise.”We see an opportunity in the “consumerization of healthcare,” viewing the broader health industry as a convergence of consumerism and medical technology. With rising national incomes, heightened awareness of health spending, and the impact of centralized volume-based procurement, many advanced technologies are increasingly being applied in consumer-oriented scenarios. Moreover, payment is no longer solely reliant on public medical insurance but also on out-of-pocket expenditures by individuals. In this environment, companies must ultimately build strong brands.Over the past decade, Jinding has successfully built its consumer brand, cultivating a unique consumer-centric DNA and mastering the art of brand building. This expertise is a key reason why Jinding is well-positioned to empower projects in the general health sector.“Methuselah boasts extensive medical expertise and has been deeply engaged in the field of medical nutrition for over a decade, maintaining a leading position in Shanghai and other regions ahead of its domestic peers. Founder Mr. Tang and his team are deeply committed to medical nutrition. Under Mr. Tang’s leadership, Methuselah is poised to achieve rapid, high-quality, and efficient growth, emerging as a leader in the medical nutrition industry.”
