In 2022, the radiopharmaceutical sector continued to advance. In February, Grand Pharma’s introduction of Sirtex’s core product, yttrium [90Y] microsphere injection, received regulatory approval, achieving formal clinical application three months later and marking the official market entry of therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals in China. In August, Xiantong Medicine, a pioneer in innovative domestic radiopharmaceuticals, initiated the Phase III clinical trial of lutetium [177Lu] oxodotreotide injection, the first targeted therapeutic radiopharmaceutical in China. In September, WuXi BoRui, a representative enterprise in China’s innovative radiopharmaceutical sector, completed a substantial Series A financing round of nearly RMB 300 million. In November, related collaborations entered an intensive phase: Newray Therapeutics and Nanjing Angel Biological Technology jointly signed the “Strategic Cooperation Agreement for the Development of Peptide Radionuclide Conjugate (PRC) Innovative Drugs”; shortly thereafter, Shanghai FocuLink acquired the U.S.-based company Focus-X for USD 245 million, completing a cross-border transaction integrating radiopharmaceuticals with peptides.
The radiopharmaceutical industry attracted close attention from regulators, investors, and upstream and downstream stakeholders this year, invigorating the radiopharmaceutical community. However, the industry has seen little substantial improvement overall. Issues such as regulatory breakthroughs, weaknesses at both ends of the radiopharmaceutical supply chain, and strategies for discovering new drugs have been brought to the forefront for in-depth discussion.
These developments further confirm that the industry has entered a new cycle.
