West China Second University Hospital, Sichuan University (hereinafter referred to as “West China Second Hospital”) is the National Regional Medical Center for Children. It has ranked first among obstetrics and gynecology hospitals (including maternal and child health care hospitals) in the national performance assessment of tertiary public hospitals for four consecutive years. As a top-tier university-affiliated hospital integrating medical care, teaching, scientific research, preventive healthcare, and talent development, it stands out as a leader in scientific innovation within the field of maternal and child health. On March 7, 2023, West China Second Hospital formally signed a ten-year cooperation agreement with Kangrui (Beijing) Medical Information Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Kangrui Think Tank”) on the technological translation of the “Child Life Specialist Play Program—Wonderful Hospital Series.” This partnership aims to jointly implement the new culture of high-quality development in public hospitals and take concrete actions to build a more patient-friendly healthcare environment.
Recently, West China Second University Hospital (WCSUH) held a Science and Technology Innovation and Translation Publicity Week in late April, themed “Seeking Truth and Innovation, Strengthening Translation.” As part of this initiative, the launch ceremony for the technological translation project “Child Life Play Intervention – The Wonderful Hospital Series” was specially scheduled for April 24. Assistant President Guo Yingkun served as the chair of the ceremony and delivered remarks. He stated that, as a key player in pediatric healthcare services, WCSUH has been committed to exploring and promoting the latest medical technologies and service concepts. This commitment not only enhances clinical expertise but also delivers superior care to pediatric patients. Through collaboration with Kangrui Think Tank, WCSUH has developed the “Child Life Play Intervention – The Wonderful Hospital Series” project to create a more comfortable and relaxed healthcare experience for children, holding significant importance for child health. It is anticipated that this project will be more widely adopted in the future, marking another major breakthrough in humanistic healthcare.
Assistant to the President of West China Second University Hospital, Guo Yingkun
Che Hui, General Manager of VBInsight and Executive Dean of the China Hospital Performance Reform Institute, stated at the conference that the “Wonderful Hospital” series of child life preparation games is a technology transfer project with warmth. It represents not only a collaboration based on intellectual property and technical know-how but also a response to the new cultural development required for the high-quality growth of public hospitals. By substantially transforming medical service processes, it integrates elements of family-centered care into clinical workflows. We are particularly excited to join hands with West China Second University Hospital to advance the practice of friendly healthcare. This is a forward-looking contribution that will help accelerate the establishment of a new hospital culture in pediatric clinical settings. We believe that through our joint efforts, meticulous humanistic care should not remain an exclusive feature of a few high-end private hospitals. In China, all children should have the right to access pediatric medical care free from fear.
General Manager, Che Hui, VBInsight
“Pediatric Medical Play – The Wonder Hospital Series” is derived from a comprehensive pediatric medical play process. Based on the Patient and Family-Centered Care (PFCC) model, it employs age-appropriate language, animations, music, games, and other therapeutic adjuncts to alleviate children’s fear and anxiety during treatment. Leading institutions such as Boston Children’s Hospital, one of the top pediatric hospitals in the United States, and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, a prestigious non-profit academic medical center, have all adopted the Child Life philosophy. These hospitals implement therapeutic recreation, art, and therapy programs to genuinely address the psychological needs of children during their medical care.
Since 2010, core faculty members from West China Second University Hospital have successively visited Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in the United States for academic exchanges, comprehensively studying advanced international nursing models. In 2016, the hospital elevated the connotation of clinical expertise through child-friendly healthcare initiatives and launched a Child Life program. This program includes elective courses such as “Child Life” at Sichuan University and continuing education offerings like the “Child Life Training Course,” all of which have achieved remarkable results and earned numerous national and provincial honors. The technological translation outcome, “Child Life Therapeutic Play – The Wonderful Hospital Series,” has not only transformed traditional health education methods but also achieved groundbreaking innovations in content and design compared to existing child life tools, truly meeting the professional needs of pediatric clinical practice for medical-themed content. With the support and participation of Director Biru Luo and Deputy Director Xiufang Zhao from the Nursing Department, as well as the leader, deputy leader, and members of the Child Life Specialist Group, this project has marked a new milestone in years of practical experience.
“Pediatric Medical Play Therapy – The Wonder Hospital Series” Launch Ceremony
Kangrui Think Tank was established in October 2017. Since 2019, in addition to being selected as a think tank support institution for the Chinese Hospital Performance Reform Research Institute, its Humanistic Medicine team has been dedicated to introducing overseas, implementable models of holistic medical care services. Director Hu Youlun stated that in the past, the practice of humanistic care was often regarded as a “concept—meaningful but difficult to implement.” Particularly constrained by rigid processes and inadequate supporting tools, even opportunities to receive advanced domestic and international training often remained at the level of academic exchange. Therefore, combining Kangrui Think Tank’s Humanistic Medicine team’s industry expertise with West China Second University Hospital’s years of practical experience to jointly promote child-friendly medical practices represents not only the productization of service concepts but also the comprehensive systemic transformation and promotion of the West China Care Model.
“Wonder Hospital” is a product suite designed for various medical specialties, healthcare scenarios, and age groups. It features digital health education media tailored for children, creative medical guidance tools, and gamified therapeutic aids. By employing bright, lively, and narrative-driven visuals, it sparks children’s interest in learning about health. Its emotionally intelligent design helps demedicalize the treatment experience, effectively easing the clinical atmosphere. Through playful, game-based health education, it bridges the knowledge gap between healthcare providers and young patients, thereby enhancing communication during clinical care. The “Pediatric Medical Play Therapy Games – Wonder Hospital Series” increases children’s sense of engagement and enjoyment in the healthcare process, thus improving treatment adherence. Simultaneously, it facilitates health education, empowering children to build self-confidence and cultivate courageous behaviors.
