On May 10–11, 2023, the 3rd Sequoia Global Healthcare Industry Summit successfully kicked off at the Zhangjiang Science Hall in Shanghai. Over the course of the two-day event, medical experts, leading pharmaceutical companies, high-growth biotech startups, and investors from around the world gathered to discuss cutting-edge topics in global healthcare and forecast industry development trends through nearly 20 keynote presentations and peak dialogues.

Themed “Begin with the End in Mind, Go Far by Attending to the Minutiae,” this summit featured keynote presentations ranging from scientific breakthroughs in frontier healthcare to the implementation of technological innovations in specific application scenarios and solutions. It systematically dissected unmet needs in the healthcare sector, broadly covering hot topics of shared interest to academia, industry, and the investment community, thereby fostering effective and in-depth dialogue.
This marks the third large-scale industry summit focused on healthcare organized by Sequoia China, following its medical summits in Silicon Valley and Shanghai. As one of the earliest institutions in China to engage in professional healthcare investment, Sequoia China has conducted in-depth research and implemented systematic investment strategies over the past decade. It has invested in more than 200 healthcare companies with distinct technological advantages and high growth potential, covering multiple sub-sectors including innovative drugs, medical devices, healthcare services, precision medicine, and digital health, thereby witnessing the growth trajectory of China’s healthcare industry.
At the summit, nearly 30 top industry leaders engaged in extensive discussions and knowledge sharing on a wide range of topics, including global markets, clinical frontiers, industrial translation, cutting-edge technologies, and industry trends. Philip S. Ross, Global Chairman of J.P. Morgan Investment Bank, and Zhang Fangning, Global Director Partner at McKinsey & Company, respectively analyzed the opportunities and challenges facing the healthcare industry from a global perspective, as well as the prospects for pharmaceutical innovation in China within the global context. Distinguished academic experts, including Academician Ning Guang, President of Ruijin Hospital affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine; Academician Wang Xiaodong, Director of the National Institute of Biological Sciences, Beijing; and Academician Meng Qinghu, Chief Scientist at Yuanhua Intelligence, delivered keynote addresses on various frontier topics such as metabolic diseases, regenerative medicine, cell therapy, AI-driven protein generation, brain-computer interfaces, and surgical robots.
Yang Yunxia, Partner at Sequoia China; Cao Yibo, Managing Director at Sequoia China; and Gu Cuiping, Managing Director at Sequoia China, engaged in a roundtable discussion with over ten senior pharmaceutical professionals and founders from renowned multinational pharmaceutical companies and local biotech firms. The conversation centered on future trends for Chinese innovative drug companies, global opportunities, and the industrial ecosystem. Additionally, Yang Yue, Dean of the Institute of Drug Regulatory Science at Tsinghua University School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, shared insights on the current direction of pharmaceutical policies.
In addition to the main venue, this year’s summit featured three separate parallel sessions: the Sequoia Healthcare Ecosystem Networking Session, the Sequoia Portfolio Company Financing Roadshow Demo Day, and the Showcase of Sequoia China’s Smart Medical Genomics Incubation Achievements along with the Call for Phase III Incubation Participants & Industry Insights Sharing. These three parallel sessions unfolded across three dimensions: “R&D–Service Matchmaking,” “Investment and Financing Matchmaking,” and “Industry Insights Sharing.” Nearly 200 healthcare companies and more than 100 investment institutions attended in person. An open and efficient communication ecosystem will better facilitate breakthroughs in foundational science and systematic industrial translation, which is the original intent behind hosting the Sequoia Global Healthcare Industry Summit.
