This move marks a further step in the strategic integration of this global medical technology giant in the cardiovascular field.

Confirmation of the New Division Leader

According to official information, the cardiovascular surgery division after this merger will be led by Karim Bandali, the former head of the cardiac surgery business, as its president. Bandali publicly announced this news on LinkedIn, stating:"Today, we are officially merging the Cardiac Surgery and Aortic businesses — both teams possess deep expertise and outstanding talent, and are jointly committed to serving patients and clinicians."Image

Meanwhile, Simona Zannetti, the former head of aortic operations, left Medtronic earlier this year and has taken on the role of Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President of Clinical Research at Artivion.

Product Line Coverage After Integration

The new cardiovascular surgery division integrates the rich product lines of two major business segments. The cardiac surgery business covers surgical heart valves, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), left atrial appendage occlusion (LAA occlusion), mitral and tricuspid valve repair technologies, etc.; the aortic business includes interventional devices such as stent grafts and guidewires.

Bandali emphasized in the statement: "By integrating our capabilities, we have gained a powerful opportunity to accelerate innovation, strengthen collaboration with doctors and care teams, and make a greater impact across the entire continuum of cardiovascular care. Our daily focus is to serve more patients today than yesterday by clearly concentrating on Medtronic's mission."

Not the First Business Unit Merger

Notably, this merger is not Medtronic's first business unit integration. Since the company underwent a strategic reorganization in 2020 and established 20 business units, organizational restructuring has occurred multiple times. In 2023, Medtronic merged its surgical robotics business with the Surgical Innovations business to form a standalone Surgical business unit; in 2024, it further consolidated the Patient Monitoring and Respiratory Interventions businesses into the "Acute Care & Monitoring (ACM)" business unit while exiting the ventilator market.

This ongoing business integration reflects Medtronic's strategic intent to continuously optimize resource allocation and focus on core growth areas in the complex medical technology field.
