Hantong Medical Secures Two Rounds of Financing Within Six Months to Accelerate Clinical Development of Proprietary uRDN System

Jun 01, 2023 08:00 CST Updated 08:00

VCBeat has learned that Hantong Medical recently announced the completion of its tens-of-millions-yuan Angel+ round of financing. The round was led by Longma Peak Ventures, with existing shareholders Cowin Capital and Highpulse Capital continuing to support the company. The funds raised will be used for team building, research and development of core products, and clinical advancement.

Hantong Medical, established in 2022, is a platform-based innovative enterprise in the pan-vascular field, with interventional ultrasound as its core technology. In December 2022, the company completed its angel round of financing led by Cowin Capital, and secured additional funding within six months. This successful financing round demonstrates investors’ strong recognition of Hantong Medical’s platform strategy leveraging ultrasound technology in the pan-vascular intervention sector, as well as their solid confidence in the company’s future development.

Fully Independent R&D: Filling the Domestic Gap in Interventional Ultrasound Therapy

Hantong Medical has always regarded independent innovation as its core competitiveness. As one of the few interventional platform companies in China utilizing ultrasound technology to address pan-vascular issues, Hantong Medical, within just one year of its establishment, has developed multiple innovative products in the field of pan-vascular interventional therapy, leveraging its team’s strong R&D and innovation capabilities as well as efficient execution.

Ultrasound energy is a safe technology widely used in in vitro diagnostics. The application of interventional ultrasound for the diagnosis and treatment of pan-vascular diseases is currently in its nascent stage both domestically and internationally, offering broad prospects for development. Ultrasound energy platforms involve multiple disciplines, and particularly when employed in interventional procedures, they are subject to stringent requirements for safety and reliability.

Among these, the design and simulation of micro high-frequency ultrasound transducers, as well as achieving stable, reliable, and safe acoustic power output, present significant technical barriers. Meanwhile, the manufacturing process for ultrasound interventional catheters is highly complex, imposing stringent requirements on chip welding, insulation, and assembly techniques. The production workflow demands extensive accumulation of know-how, making it extremely challenging to maintain consistent product quality, which in turn keeps costs prohibitively high. Consequently, there is currently a market gap in China’s interventional ultrasound therapy sector, with no related products commercially available.

Hantong Medical has made breakthroughs in multiple high-end “chokepoint” technologies, with full-stack in-house R&D of core components including transducers, catheters, main units, and algorithms. It has become one of the few companies domestically and internationally to fully master the core technologies of interventional ultrasound, while maintaining a strong cost advantage.

Proprietary Renal Artery Ultrasound Ablation System (uRDN) Product, Approaching Clinical Trials

The "Chinese Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of Hypertension" state that renal denervation (RDN) therapy should be considered on the basis of differential diagnosis and treatment of secondary hypertension. RDN may be considered for patients at high cardiovascular risk with blood pressure difficult to control with medication after excluding secondary causes, as well as for hypertensive patients with poor medication adherence. With the accumulation of clinical evidence, RDN therapy is no longer limited to patients with resistant hypertension; its indications have been expanded to include uncontrolled hypertension.

Currently, there are various energy platforms available for renal denervation (RDN) products both domestically and internationally. Among these, radiofrequency and ultrasound energy dominate the market, supported by robust clinical evidence. Ultrasound is considered a superior energy source due to its deeper tissue penetration, broader 360° coverage area, and the clinical advantage of causing minimal damage to the vascular intima.

Hantong Medical’s self-developed “Renal Artery Ultrasound Ablation System (uRDN)” optimizes the acoustic field output range, delivering more stable ablation outcomes. As the first product to perform 360° uniform energy field ablation separately in the main renal artery and its branches, uRDN is expected to achieve superior blood pressure-lowering efficacy.

Currently, Hantong Medical’s uRDN product has been submitted for registration testing, and clinical trials led by top domestic experts are poised to commence. Meanwhile, other product lines developed on Hantong Medical’s ultrasound platform are also being rolled out smoothly.

Dr. Zhao Wanjin, Founder and CEO of Hantong MedicalStatement: We extend our gratitude to both new and existing shareholders for their trust and strong support. This financing will accelerate the R&D and clinical advancement of our product pipeline. The era of renal denervation (RDN) for the treatment of hypertension has arrived, offering patients more therapeutic options. Hantong Medical will remain closely aligned with clinical needs, develop superior products, and make our leading interventional ultrasound technologies accessible to a broader patient population. Looking ahead, we will further leverage our ultrasound energy technology platform to build a more diverse product portfolio and drive continuous innovation.

Yu Tiandong, Partner at Longma Peak Venture Capital FundIt was stated that hypertension affects a vast patient population, and medication alone cannot address the challenge of low patient adherence. As one of the earliest teams in China to engage in interventional ultrasound, Hantong Medical’s core team has accumulated nearly a decade of technical expertise in this field, demonstrating strong execution and outstanding innovation. Its launched ultrasonic energy platform, Re-sonic 360, delivers uniform 360° ablation simultaneously in both main trunks and branches, with greater ablation depth. It is poised to become a product with superior blood pressure-lowering efficacy and simpler operation, thereby offering an alternative to radiofrequency energy. We hope that our collaboration with Hantong Medical will accelerate the commercialization of its products in therapeutic areas such as diabetes and heart failure, which are built upon its platform technology, ultimately benefiting patients.

Xi Yanbin, Partner at Cowin Capital Beijing Healthcare FundIt was stated that hypertension represents a therapeutic area with significant unmet clinical needs and a vast market potential, and renal denervation (RDN) products are among the few where domestic and international companies start from a comparable baseline. The uRDN product launched by Hantong Medical combines the advantages of addressing clinical needs with the favorable safety profile of ultrasound technology. It features simple operation, short procedural time, and is well-suited for deployment in primary care hospitals. We are pleased to participate in Hantong Medical’s development and believe that, leveraging the company’s excellent team in R&D and execution, it will continue to deliver internationally competitive products in the field of interventional ultrasound.

Zhai Jingbo, Partner at VCBeatIt is indicated that interventional hypertension technologies, represented by renal denervation (RDN), as a novel approach to hypertension management, will become one of the "three pillars" alongside lifestyle interventions and pharmacological therapy. Meanwhile, ultrasound-based denervation ablation holds significant potential for application in diabetes, heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, and other fields. In China, however, this remains a completely untapped market, as no domestic manufacturers have yet overcome the substantial technical barriers involving high-frequency ultrasound transducers, stable energy output, catheter manufacturing, and algorithms. The founding team of Hantong Medical possesses extensive technological expertise in this field and is poised to develop products surpassing those of international giants, thereby achieving the leading position among Chinese manufacturers.
