Jun 05, 2023 08:00 CST Updated 08:00

The rapid advancements in stem cell technology have brought new solutions to human health. Theoretically, stem cells hold the potential to treat various refractory diseases, offering new hope for addressing major illnesses by repairing and replacing aged or damaged tissues. They show promise in multiple fields, including the nervous system, endocrine system, microvascular system, and immune system.

On the other hand, due to the late start of stem cell research in China, the market is mixed with good and bad players. There are many companies that use the concept of stem cells to "scare" people. In the field of health management, the situation is even more uneven, which makes people doubt the safety and reliability of stem cell technology.

“Although stem cells have become a major trend for the future, public misconceptions about them remain deeply entrenched: some believe they are panaceas, while others dismiss them as mere ‘myths.’ Meanwhile, the stem cell market is characterized by disorder, health management practices are highly varied and inconsistent, and people remain skeptical of technical services due to a lack of understanding,” said Han Zhihai, CEO of Sinocell.

Han Zhongchao, Academician of the French National Academy of Technologies; Foreign Corresponding Member of the French National Academy of Medicine

Academician Han Zhongchao is a Member of the French National Academy of Technologies and an International Corresponding Member of the French National Academy of Medicine. He serves as Director of the National Engineering Research Center for Stem Cell Technology, Director of the National Engineering Research Center for Cellular Products, and Chairman of the Academic Committee of the State Key Laboratory of Experimental Hematology.

In 2007, Academician Han Zhongchao embarked on the path of translating scientific research into practical applications by founding Hanyu United Group, with a commitment to making research benefits accessible to a broader population. Centered on cell therapy and regenerative medicine technologies, Hanyu United focuses on innovation and development within the cellular technology industry. According to QYResearch data, the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of China’s stem cell medical industry market size was approximately 15% from 2020 to 2026. In the coming years, China’s share of the global stem cell medical industry market is expected to rise further.

Great Opportunities, Yet Five Major Challenges Remain in the Translational Research of Stem Cells. According to Academician Han Zhongchao, “First is ethics, which pertains to standards for stem cell preparation; for instance, the acquisition and use of embryonic stem cells must adhere to ethical principles. Second is technology; stem cell research started relatively late in China and requires highly sophisticated technical support, with many technical hurdles still awaiting resolution. Third is safety; since China began accepting applications for new stem cell drugs in 2017, insufficient real-world experimental data have been accumulated. Scientific evaluation and monitoring are needed for tumorigenicity, immunogenicity, and heterogeneity of cells. Fourth is legal and regulatory compliance; national and local laws and regulations must be followed, and supervision and management should be strengthened.”

“The final issue concerns marketization. If we can advance science popularization efforts to help the public understand what stem cells are, their applications, and how they are used, then any new breakthroughs in R&D will shorten the public’s acceptance period, enabling more people to benefit more quickly,” said Academician Han Zhongchao. Every emerging entity must follow the logic of development. Issues such as how to successfully translate scientific research outcomes into practical applications and how to promote and popularize them must be carefully considered. This is also a major reason why Han’s Group incubated Sinocelltech.

Focusing on Health Management: Leveraging Han's Ark as a Platform to Enable Multiple Functions

In recent years, health management services focusing on personalized health assessments, wellness consultations, and disease rehabilitation have gained significant momentum. The "Healthy China 2030" Planning Outline explicitly emphasizes the continuous advancement of national health information services that integrate prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and self-management across the entire life cycle. With the deepening aging of society, rising incidence of chronic diseases, and growing public health awareness, coupled with the rapid emergence of new technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, and biotechnology, the field of health management is experiencing an unprecedented opportunity for development.

According to the VCBeat database, there have been a total of 76 investment deals in the primary market for the health management sector from 2022 to present. Additionally, data from PwC indicates that China is the world’s second-largest healthcare industry market, with the broader health industry market size growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of up to 13% over the past few years.

Health management is relevant to everyone, yet the sector continues to face pain points such as the absence of industry standards, low public awareness, and an incomplete service chain, which hinder public access to and adoption of emerging technologies like stem cells. Therefore, in the view of Academician Han Zhongchao, having Sinocelltech enter the health management sector from a market-oriented perspective—continuously popularizing stem cell knowledge and developing applications—plays a significant role in promoting the establishment of industry standards for health management and expanding the use of stem cells to benefit a broader population.
