Professor Eran Segal teaches at the Weizmann Institute of Science.

Professor Segal is a Professor at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel. He leads the Segal Lab, an interdisciplinary laboratory comprising computational biologists, experts in computational and systems biology, and experimental scientists. With extensive expertise in machine learning, computational biology, and the analysis of heterogeneous high-throughput genomic data, his research focuses on microbiomics, nutrition, and genetics, as well as their impacts on health and disease. His research aim is to advance precision medicine/personalized medicine by leveraging big data from human populations.

Led by Professor Segal and other scientists, the Weizmann Institute of Science launched the Personalized Nutrition Project, a large-scale nutritional science study aimed at helping individuals make dietary choices that promote health and enhance quality of life. It is the world’s first personalized nutrition study to combine extensive data collection with precise predictive algorithms. Professor Segal employed a self-developed machine learning algorithm that integrates data on gut microbiota, blood biomarkers, health questionnaires, anthropometric measurements, and food logs to accurately predict volunteers’ blood glucose levels and provide personalized nutritional guidance, with gut microbiota data proving particularly informative. The project achieved remarkable success, and its findings were published in the journal Cell.
