Generate cash flow with cost-effective tandem mass spectrometry products,

Strategically Deploying TOF Products to Seize the Next Technological High Ground

“China is a major market with substantial demand for analytical testing, offering vast market potential in food safety, environmental protection, industry, and the IVD sector. The pandemic has revealed three key trends in national testing requirements: low entry costs, total cost of ownership within half that of foreign counterparts, and per-sample testing costs kept under RMB 10.”

According to Xu Guobin, the mass spectrometry market currently exhibits a pronounced Pareto principle (80/20 rule). The market position and penetration rates of first- and second-tier foreign products are high and well-established, making it difficult for third- and fourth-tier manufacturers to disrupt the landscape even with aggressive promotional efforts. For domestically produced mass spectrometers to break through, manufacturers must either reduce manufacturing costs and prices to drive sales volume, or develop specialized, high-margin products tailored to niche applications.

Based on this assessment, Puxiu Technology has implemented a platform-based strategy, establishing two product lines: serial and Time-of-Flight (TOF). The serial series targets the basic market, serving as the company’s cash cow for profitability; the TOF series targets the high-end market, representing a strategic preemptive move in future external markets. These two product lines complement each other, enabling Puxiu Technology to achieve both stability and long-term growth.

C45 LC-MS/MS Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer (Domestic)

Tandem mass spectrometry offers excellent quantitative performance, high sensitivity, and high specificity, making it suitable for the detection of small molecules. Its applications are rapidly expanding in areas such as newborn screening, therapeutic drug monitoring, and vitamin testing. Since its inception, Puxiu Technology has targeted the hundred-billion-level quadrupole mass spectrometry market by launching the C45, C55, and C65 liquid chromatography-tandem quadrupole mass spectrometers, leveraging cost-effective tandem MS products to penetrate the IVD clinical mass spectrometry market.

Its core competitive advantages lie in its ease of operation, low cost, stability and reliability, and low failure rate. Furthermore, this product series is directly compatible with ICP and EI ion sources, offering a disruptive advantage over the single quadrupole market. It also enables the development of specialized equipment, such as HPCI ion source-based detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaled breath.

“Making simple products stable and reliable is no less challenging than developing high-end ones, but once achieved, they become highly competitive cash cow products,” Xu Guobin told VCBeat. Ningbo Puxiu Technology Co., Ltd.’s triple quadrupole liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) system boasts advantages such as high sensitivity, excellent quantitative reproducibility, and outstanding durability. Its performance rivals that of foreign counterparts, while its price is only one-quarter that of imported products.

Taking quantitative repeatability as an example, the Puxiu Technology tandem mass spectrometry platform employs full electronic flow control technology to achieve stable, automatic regulation of ion source temperature and gas flows. The high-voltage supplies for the ion source and detector, as well as the electronic lens voltages, adopt high-precision modular designs, while the quadrupole power supply has been redesigned to meet a time-of-flight (TOF) stability standard of 2 parts per 100,000. These features ensure mass stability and consistent resolution. Extensive experimental data demonstrate that the relative standard deviation (RSD) of Puxiu Technology’s tandem mass spectrometry series can be maintained within 3%. Combined with a broad linear dynamic range and a counting rate of 48 MHz, this makes the Puxiu Technology tandem mass spectrometry series a powerful tool for quantitative analysis.

Time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometry has emerged as a new hotspot in clinical mass spectrometry and is widely recognized within the industry as the next key competitive frontier. While the application of MALDI-TOF in microbial identification is relatively mature, its broad molecular weight range enables the detection of both large and small biomolecules. Consequently, it holds substantial potential for applications in nucleic acid detection, mass spectrometry imaging, and quantitative protein analysis. It offers particular advantages in the analysis of highly complex peptides and proteins, especially those with N-/O-glycosylation and PEGylation modifications.

Constrained by high technological barriers, some domestic MALDI-TOF systems have primarily been developed through reverse engineering, resulting in high manufacturing costs and an inability to export overseas. Adhering to a philosophy of low cost and high performance, Puxiu Technology has created the next generation of Chinese-made MALDI-TOF products. Currently, core components are fully localized, with key components such as nitrogen lasers independently developed. The product’s price is competitive with qPCR, while offering higher throughput, a simpler and faster workflow, and superior accuracy, particularly for influenza detection. It not only enables import substitution but also supports OEM partnerships with international manufacturers.

With the support of Kaifeng Venture Capital and Shanlan Capital, Puxiu Technology is also actively building dedicated IVD workstations. The entire system encompasses mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography, sample pre-treatment, downstream automation, and database management.

Reverse-engineer project initiation from clearly defined market demands to avoid intense internal competition.

As the mass spectrometry industry continues to heat up, new entrants are constantly joining the fray. With numerous participants and a wide array of products in China’s mass spectrometry sector, the industry is increasingly showing signs of intense, involutionary competition. However, this fierce battleground seems not to have affected Ningbo Puxiu Technology Co., Ltd.

“We will not initiate projects for products that lack market demand or direct drivers,” Xu Guobin told VCBeat, noting that the company has its own established framework for internal product project initiation.

Project initiation is contingent upon existing customer demand and orders; letters of intent must be valued at tens of millions, while direct orders must reach the million-level threshold. Furthermore, products with excessively low gross margins will not be approved for project initiation.

Secondly, all approved projects involve products with a certain level of technological sophistication. Even for products considered lower-end within foreign product portfolios, the company’s ability to achieve full localization enables substantial gross profit margins, thereby supporting the company’s stable development.

Furthermore, adhering to the philosophy of “starting with a sprint and treating the first battle as the decisive one,” the company considers technological trends and market demands for the next five years during project initiation and product design, employing a backward-design approach from the end goal. For instance, Puxiu Technology made a decisive move to lay out its R&D strategy in the early stages of MALDI-TOF technology emergence, which has enabled it to take the lead in related technical products.
