Comprehensive Lung Health Care: 2023 Qingdao Respiratory Industry Conference and the 22nd Respiratory Week

Sep 29, 2023 08:00 CST Updated 08:00

We Chinese people are profoundly romantic, with the bright full moon serving as a powerful bond that unites us all. The Mid-Autumn Festival is a time for family reunions, honoring elders, and offering prayers; it conveys our deep attachment to family and kinship, encapsulating the profound bonds of blood relations and devotion to both home and country. Yet, there is always a group of individuals who, much like the moon hanging high in the sky illuminating the way home with its gentle, radiant light, remain steadfast at their posts, silently and selflessly fulfilling their duties. For many years, our medical professionals and colleagues have sacrificed holiday time with their families to fight on the front lines of healthcare, safeguarding the health and lives of the public. Their goal is to help patients recover from illness swiftly and reunite with their loved ones. Through your unwavering dedication, you enable countless families to enjoy their reunions under the full moon during the Mid-Autumn Festival, thereby embodying the noble virtues of compassionate healing and boundless love.

Admiring the Mid-Autumn Moon, Celebrating Reunion on Earth. We look forward to reuniting with you on October 14 at the 2023 Qingdao Respiratory Industry Conference and the 22nd Respiratory Week.

This is a high-level academic symposium on lung health, collaboratively built for all professionals in respiratory medicine. As one of the public health issues that seriously affect residents' health, the prevention and control situation of respiratory diseases in China is extremely severe. Data shows that the total number of patients with chronic respiratory diseases in China has exceeded 300 million, including nearly 100 million patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and approximately 45.7 million asthma patients aged 20 and above; there are about 781,000 new cases of lung cancer in China each year. In stark contrast to the high incidence and mortality rates are the low awareness rate, low consultation rate, low examination rate, and low standardized treatment rate of these diseases.

In 2019, the Chinese government released the Healthy China Action Plan (2019–2030), explicitly listing the prevention and control of chronic respiratory diseases as one of the 15 major initiatives. In 2022, the General Office of the State Council issued the 14th Five-Year Plan for National Health, further emphasizing the need to “strengthen comprehensive prevention and control of chronic diseases and interventions for injury prevention.” To advance the grand vision of “Healthy China 2030” and foster a robust ecosystem for Qingdao’s respiratory health industry, the “2023 Qingdao Respiratory Industry Conference and the 22nd Respiratory Week,” jointly organized by the Qingdao Municipal People’s Government, the Qingdao Municipal Science and Technology Bureau, the Qingdao Municipal Bureau of Industry and Information Technology, the Qingdao Municipal Health Commission, the Administrative Committee of Qingdao National High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, and AstraZeneca Investment (China) Co., Ltd., will officially open on October 14, 2023.

Themed “Comprehensive Care for Lung Health,” this conference calls on the general public to prioritize lung health, enhance standardized, full-course management of respiratory diseases, explore the application of innovative respiratory solutions in areas such as digital diagnosis and treatment, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, and interventional therapy, and promote high-quality development in the field of respiratory medicine.

Since the inaugural “Respiratory Health Week” in 1999, the initiative has remained committed to the comprehensive management of respiratory diseases, dedicated to improving national lung health and the management standards for related conditions. It covers a wide range of topics, including innovative medicines, novel diagnostic and treatment protocols, translation of medical research into practice, and innovative care models, taking concrete actions to support the realization of the grand vision of “Healthy China 2030.” Addressing deep-seated pain points such as low diagnosis rates, inadequate treatment, and suboptimal disease management, AstraZeneca pioneered the “Integrated Innovative Concept for Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Cough and Asthma.” This concept primarily targets patients with chronic cough and asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, and associated comorbidities. By optimizing clinical pathways, it facilitates convenient, one-stop, and efficient diagnosis and treatment, thereby increasing the diagnosis rates of chronic respiratory diseases and lung cancer. Furthermore, this approach not only supports the establishment of multidisciplinary collaboration models but also provides patients with integrated, continuous, closed-loop medical services both within and outside hospitals. Ultimately, it aims to enhance the diagnosis and treatment standards for chronic respiratory cough/asthma conditions and lung cancer in China, while comprehensively promoting health education, scientific disease management, and translational medical research. This year, aligning with its industrial strategy, AstraZeneca announced the formal signing of an investment cooperation agreement with the Qingdao High-Tech Industrial Development Zone to establish a new production and supply base for metered-dose inhalers (MDIs). By leveraging resources from government, industry, academia, research institutions, healthcare providers, and investors, AstraZeneca seeks to drive innovation in respiratory technologies and solutions, fostering a robust ecosystem for the respiratory industry.

How Should the New Era of Lung Health Be Defined? From the perspectives of operability and practicality, what current methods or tools can help patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer in China achieve early screening, diagnosis, and treatment? What are the pain points in the whole-course management of respiratory diseases, and what are the potential solutions? How can the implementation of innovative solutions be accelerated? During this conference, numerous authoritative academicians, key opinion leaders, pharmaceutical industry leaders, senior investors, and other stakeholders from across China’s respiratory field will share cutting-edge achievements and discuss trends surrounding hot industry topics. The conference aims to deepen the integration of industry, technology, and capital, gather advanced medical techniques and innovative technical solutions from both domestic and international sources, and fully leverage resources to provide comprehensive protection for lung health.

As articulated by Academician Wang Chen in his “Six-Character Maxim for Promotion, Prevention, Diagnosis, Control, Treatment, and Rehabilitation”: “Promotion” refers to health promotion; “Prevention” to disease prevention; “Diagnosis” to the assessment and determination of health and disease status; “Control” to preventing minor conditions from progressing into major diseases and stopping transmission from one individual to multiple others; “Treatment” to correcting pathological and pathophysiological states; and “Rehabilitation” to enhancing patients’ physical, mental, and social adaptive capacities by mobilizing the body’s compensatory mechanisms despite the long-term presence of chronic diseases. The conference features seven forums: the Pulmonary Health Summit Forum, the COPD Forum, the Bronchial Asthma Forum, the Lung Cancer Forum, the Pediatric Respiratory Infections Forum, the Primary Care Forum, and the Innovative Industry Ecosystem Forum. These forums comprehensively cover multiple fields, including COPD, asthma, lung cancer, pediatrics, pulmonary infections, primary care, and the innovative industry ecosystem, with the aim of improving standardized, whole-course management of respiratory diseases.

During the conference, supporting activities such as innovation project roadshows and business matchmaking will be held, providing innovators with opportunities to showcase their projects and enabling clinicians and potential partners to gain in-depth insights into innovative projects and solutions, thereby accelerating innovation and development in the field of respiratory medicine.
