The brain is one of the most complex structures in nature, containing nearly 100 billion neurons that connect and interact within intricate networks, serving as the material basis for human intelligence, emotion, cognition, and behavior. Brain science is hailed as the “last mile” in unraveling the mysteries of human intelligence and is a key driver of revolutionary breakthroughs in fields such as healthcare and education. With strong support from national strategies, China’s brain science industry is currently in a critical period of strategic opportunity. Following the launch of the 14th Five-Year Plan, brain science has been explicitly identified as a priority direction for national scientific and technological innovation. In 2021, the major project on “Brain Science and Brain-Inspired Research” was included in the National Key Scientific and Technological Innovation 2030 Major Projects, ushering in a new phase of rapid development for brain science research in China. While brain science research holds immense potential, significant challenges remain in translating laboratory findings into market applications. The core challenge in the industrialization of brain science lies in transforming scientific achievements into tangible productive forces and advancing from basic research to commercial applications.
As a pioneer demonstration zone for socialism, Shenzhen is also a city that has taken the lead in laying out its brain science industry. Within Shenzhen’s “20+8” industrial clusters, which the city is striving to cultivate, brain science and brain-inspired intelligence are regarded as key growth areas in future industries. In terms of basic research, the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Institute of Brain Science (hereinafter referred to as the “Shenzhen-Hong Kong Brain Institute”), jointly led by the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, is one of the basic research institutions established by Shenzhen. It is also the first basic research institution in Shenzhen jointly built by Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Regarding scientific research support, the Major Science and Technology Infrastructure for Brain Analysis and Brain Simulation, led by the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Brain Institute, is a key construction project in the startup area of Guangming Science City. Officially approved by the Shenzhen Municipal Development and Reform Commission in August 2020, it has a total estimated equipment investment of over RMB 800 million. In addition, the Shenzhen Brain Science Technology Industry Innovation Center (hereinafter referred to as the “Brain Innovation Center”), built with strong support from the Shenzhen Municipal Government and the Guangming District Government, is China’s first industrial common technology service platform in the field of brain science. Adhering to the integrated development concept of “innovation, venture capital, and entrepreneurship,” the center empowers both capital and enterprises through a model of “sharing, innovation, and service,” striving to create an industrial incubation base characterized by “nurturing technological parks, enhancing efficiency through empowerment, attracting intelligent enterprises, and integrating industry with research.” With continuous improvements in policies, platform development, facility construction, and talent cultivation, Shenzhen continues to increase its support for the brain science industry, striving to build a world-class R&D and industrial base for brain science. Innovation factors in the brain science and brain-inspired intelligence industry are accelerating their aggregation, with increasingly clear industrial forms and expanding scale.
The Shenzhen Society for Brain Science (hereinafter referred to as the “Society”) is a local, academic, non-profit social organization co-founded by the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, as the initiating entity, and brain science experts from Shenzhen People’s Hospital, Shenzhen Second People’s Hospital, Shenzhen University, Southern University of Science and Technology, Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School, Shenzhen University of Technology (in preparation), Shenzhen Bay Laboratory, and Shenzhen Institute of Neuroscience. It was officially established on November 17, 2022, upon review and approval by the Shenzhen Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau.
Guided by demand-driven source innovation and following the path of “sharing, innovation, and service,” the Society has established a platform for academic-industrial exchange to accelerate the integration of basic research, applied basic research, clinical research, and industrialization in Shenzhen’s brain science sector. To fully leverage the leading role of brain science technological innovation in industrial development and to strengthen academic-industrial exchanges in brain science and brain-inspired intelligence, the Society, under the guidance of the Shenzhen Municipal Science and Technology Innovation Commission, spearheaded the establishment of the “Shenzhen Brain Science and Brain-Inspired Intelligence Industry Alliance.” To date, three editions of the “Guangming Brain Science Conference” series have been successfully held in Guangming Science City, centered on the themes of “Brain and Health Technology,” “Brain Science Empowering the Brain Industry: Four New Engines Driving into the Future,” and “Exploring Brain Science, Gathering the Brain Industry, Shaping the Brain Future.” These flagship events have garnered widespread attention from all sectors of society and have initially achieved the clustering of the academic and industrial ecosystem for brain science and brain-inspired intelligence in Guangming Science City.
In 2023, to promote technological advancements in national brain science research, continue to drive the translation of scientific and technological achievements in the field of brain science into real-world productivity, and jointly advance public brain health and brain science innovation to support the Healthy China Strategy,Chinese Society for Neuroscience, Branch of Neuroscience Research Techniques; Shenzhen Society for Brain Science; Shenzhen Brain Science and Brain-Inspired Intelligence Industry Alliance; VCBeat; VB100; VCBeatCo-initiated by“The 4th Guangming Brain Science Conference: Bay Area Brain Science Industry Innovation and Cooperation Conference · 2023, the 2nd Annual Meeting of the Shenzhen Society for Neuroscience, and the Annual Meeting of the Neuroscience Research Technology Branch of the Chinese Society for Neuroscience.”This conference will also serve asThe Brain Science Parallel Forum of the Future Industry Forum at the 5th World Science, Technology and Development Forum,atNovember 16-17, 2023 in Shenzhen, ChinaHosted.
This conference will be held with“Brain Diseases: Fundamentals and Clinical Translation”Centered on this theme, we invite Nobel laureates, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, clinical experts, leading investors, and industry representatives to convene and discuss new technologies across the entire ecosystem of brain disorders. Addressing practical needs in medical devices, drug development, brain-inspired algorithms, and translational clinical research, participants will jointly chart the future course of the brain science industry.
The conference will bring together top scientists and experts from the academic and clinical communities, as well as leaders from the industry, both domestically and internationally, to share their experiences. Together, we aim to build a platform for academic exchange and foster integration among industry, academia, research, and healthcare. This will create opportunities for intellectual engagement among scientists, clinical researchers, ecosystem entrepreneurs, young scholars, and students, inspiring research and learning, identifying new directions for brain science research, and exploring pathways for translating research outcomes into practical applications.

Centered on two core objectives—comprehensively showcasing the innovative ecosystem of China’s brain science industry and fully promoting exchange and interaction among academia, industry, research, clinical application, and investment—the conference will focus on technological frontiers, achievement translation, industrial innovation, clinical applications, and investment and financing trends, creating a premier event that integrates academia, industry, and venture capital.
