The 14th China (Taizhou) International Medical Expo Kicks Off on October 19, 2023

A global exhibition showcasing innovative pharmaceutical technologies and achievements, featuring participation from nearly 600 renowned enterprises across 17 countries and regions; a three-day extravaganza of industry conferences; 19 thematic forums for knowledge sharing; involvement of 11 academicians and over 100 industry leaders focusing on hot topics in industrial development. The event invited more than 3,000 attendees, including government officials at various levels, academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, experts, scholars, and corporate executives. By collaborating with well-known domestic and international industry associations, leading enterprises, and authoritative institutions, and by keeping pace with the latest policy trends and development directions, the event established an international platform for exchange and cooperation in the pharmaceutical and health industries. It gathered forward-looking information in the biomedical field from both home and abroad, promoted innovative international cooperation in biomedicine, helped build an ecosystem for the broader health industry, and drove high-quality development in the biomedical and health sectors.

Since 2010, the China (Taizhou) International Pharmaceutical Expo has successfully held thirteen sessions, attracting nearly 10,000 domestic and international institutions and enterprises to exhibit, with over 400,000 visitor attendances. A large number of global pharmaceutical industry giants have made their appearances, while innovative pharmaceutical resources and high-end talents from home and abroad have gathered competitively. The expo has played a significant role in promoting the “Healthy China” initiative, Internet+ healthcare, product research and development, healthcare reform, and international cooperation. The Pharmaceutical Expo has become a “barometer” for the development of the pharmaceutical industry, and China Medical City is emerging as a “new landmark” for the clustering of the pharmaceutical industry.

China Medical City, the host venue of the China (Taizhou) International Medicine Expo, is the first national-level pharmaceutical high-tech zone in China. Since its construction commenced in 2005, it has closely adhered to its strategic positioning of “becoming No. 1 in China and renowned worldwide,” forging a path of vigorous development from scratch, from small beginnings to significant scale, and achieving leapfrog growth. It is accelerating its development into a specialized biomedical industrial park characterized by distinct advantages in biopharmaceuticals, a complete industrial chain, robust technical platforms, and professional service capabilities.

Major projects are being established in succession, and the momentum for development continues to strengthen.

Since the beginning of this year, key projects such as Cavendish and Methuselah have been signed in succession. The vaccine industrialization and capacity expansion project of Recbio, and the construction project of Merle Medical Device Production and R&D Base have commenced one after another. The NovaLi intelligent manufacturing project for high-end wound care materials and dressings, and the pilot-scale industrialization project of Taikang Biologicals’ antibody drugs have been successfully completed. In addition, 20 projects with a total investment of RMB 6 billion were centrally signed at the 2023 China Medical City (Shanghai) Investment Promotion Conference. AstraZeneca plans to increase its capital injection into the Taizhou production and supply base to further expand production capacity, continuously enhancing the development momentum of China Medical City.

In 2023, China Medical City achieved remarkable success in product approvals, with multiple blockbuster products launched consecutively. These include Taikang Bio’s Denosumab Injection (the second denosumab biosimilar globally), Zhonghui Bio’s Quadrivalent Influenza Virus Subunit Vaccine (the first quadrivalent influenza virus subunit vaccine in China), Mabwell’s Omalizumab Alpha for Injection (the first domestically developed therapeutic antibody for allergic asthma in China), Changtai Pharma’s Olanzapine and Fluoxetine Capsules (the first combination drug for bipolar disorder in China), Biolity’s Feline Triple Vaccine (among the first batch of domestically produced feline triple vaccines), Xinlikang’s Polyhydroxyethyl Silicate Fiber Dressing, and Kunyu Health’s Xiaobaitouyou Special Medical Food for Children, among others.

Centered on whole-chain industrial innovation, we will strengthen policy incentives, concentrate efforts on building major innovation platforms, reinforce the principal role of enterprises in innovation, attract high-level talent, and establish a high-quality regional innovation system. We will accelerate the development of the Veterinary Biological Products Technology Innovation Center, collaborate with the Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences to launch the first batch of “Open Competition” initiatives, facilitate the formation of an innovation consortium by the ICGEB Regional Research Center, reach a consensus with Chengdu Huaxi Haiqi on jointly establishing a Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) Center for non-clinical drug studies, and promote the establishment of joint innovation centers between the Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute and enterprises such as Bioperfectus Technologies, Bangshi Medical, and Suzhong Biology.

Adhering to the principle of letting professionals handle professional tasks, we provided guidance on the inclusion and cultivation of high-quality small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the certification of innovative SMEs, the cultivation and database establishment of “Specialized, Refined, Differential, and Innovative” (SRDI) enterprises, the application for benchmark factories in the industrial internet, medical insurance market access, and the implementation of variety-based reward policies, achieving fruitful results. We facilitated the alignment between industry and finance to empower the development of the real economy, accelerated efforts to enhance the quality of functional zones within the industrial park, initiated the planning and construction of the seventh phase of the industrial cluster area, and solidly advanced the “Hero Based on Output per Mu” reform, thereby expanding new spaces for the clustered development of the pharmaceutical industry.

At the end of 2022, the Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Jiangsu Provincial People’s Government issued the “Opinions on Supporting the High-Quality Development of Taizhou’s Big Health Industry,” which clarified the strategic positioning of Taizhou’s big health industry and introduced a comprehensive package of specific support policies. Taizhou is seizing the opportunities and momentum in the big health sector, aiming to reach an industry scale of RMB 400 billion by the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan period.
