This is an unprecedented winter.

During the three years of the pandemic, an influx of policy support, capital, and talent fueled a “boom” in the industry; yet three years on, amid widespread anticipation, the expected recovery has failed to materialize, giving way instead to a more biting chill.

Yet, in retrospect, we have faced numerous challenges time and again. In 2009, we held the first Annual Conference on the Competitiveness of China’s Listed Pharmaceutical Companies, which was the precursor to the Qisi Conference. The theme of the inaugural conference was: “Compete with Yourself, Learn from the Strong.” That year saw the overall listing of New Shanghai Pharmaceuticals; Sinopharm Group went public, becoming China’s most valuable pharmaceutical company by market capitalization—a crowning achievement in Fosun Pharma’s industrial integration; and Jizhong Energy Group took control of North China Pharmaceutical Group, marking the beginning of a tumultuous journey for this former “King of Chinese Pharmaceuticals.” Coincidentally, the new global “King of Pharmaceuticals” also emerged that year, as Pfizer acquired Wyeth for $68 billion, becoming the world’s largest pharmaceutical company.

That year witnessed the H1N1 influenza outbreak, drug safety incidents, an anti-corruption campaign in the pharmaceutical industry, and the highly anticipated new healthcare reform. Amidst the shadow of the global financial crisis, China’s ChiNext board launched, with six pharmaceutical companies among the first to list. The new healthcare reform was implemented alongside sustained annual growth exceeding 20% for several consecutive years.

Standing at the present moment of each year, we always feel that there are certain “insurmountable hurdles.” From 2009 to 2023, although every year felt like a period of enduring hardships and struggles, it is only in recent years that people have had a more piercing realization. Without going into distant history, let us consider recent clinical inspections, key drug monitoring, centralized procurement, national medical insurance negotiations, and the ongoing compliance storm. The term “piercing” refers to the distress caused by shrinking profits, layoffs and pay cuts, and even company closures. Most seriously, some individuals have begun to lose confidence, and this lack of confidence stems from an unwillingness to change past ways of doing things.

Therefore, the harsher the winter, the more we must set aside pessimism.

In 2023, biotech firms gritted their teeth, pharmaceutical companies remained resilient, and investors pressed forward despite the challenges. As the biomedical sector rapidly transitioned from a “boom” to a “deep freeze,” we need to reflect more than ever on the path ahead. It is time for those in the pharmaceutical industry who have thrived against the headwinds to sit down and have a serious discussion.
