Brain Science Innovation Development Forum: Exploring New Pathways for Full-Industry Advancement

Brain science, as a cutting-edge and challenging research field, has become the focal point of global technological competition. As early as the late 1980s, countries and regions such as the European Union, the United States, and Japan successively launched brain science research initiatives, known as “Brain Projects.” Against this backdrop, a large number of research institutions and enterprises, including the Allen Institute for Brain Science in Seattle and Google, have flocked to this rapidly emerging field.

China has also refused to lag behind, officially launching its Brain Project during the 13th Five-Year Plan period. This initiative focuses on two main directions: brain science research aimed at exploring the mysteries of the brain and tackling brain disorders, and brain-inspired research dedicated to establishing and developing artificial intelligence technologies. In the Special Plan for National Basic Research during the 13th Five-Year Plan period, brain and cognition, brain-machine intelligence, and brain health were explicitly identified as core issues. Furthermore, the Outline of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021–2025) and the Long-Range Objectives Through the Year 2035 clearly establish artificial intelligence and brain science as national strategic scientific and technological forces, with brain-computer interface technology recognized as a key component of integrated brain-machine intelligence technologies.

In recent years, more than half of China’s demand in the field of brain science has relied on imports, with deficiencies in bandwidth, precision, and stability. Due to a lack of original core technologies, most domestic research institutions and enterprises have often been limited to following foreign technological advancements, resulting in fragmented and unsystematic development. However, over the past two years, export controls imposed by foreign countries on brain science technologies have instead spurred upgrades across the industrial chain for domestic brain science research and innovation, leading to the emergence of an increasing number of brain-computer interface (BCI) companies.
