Recently, Brainsmart Technology, an innovative brain-computer interface company, announced that it has completed an angel round series financing of over ten million US dollars. This round of financing was successively led by Kangjun Capital and BlueRun Ventures.Rehabilitation Capital as a Synergistic Support in the Greater Health Industry, helping China's brain-computer interface technology embark on a new journey towards industrialization. The raised funds will mainly be used for product engineering advancement, neural foundational model development, and GMP production facility construction, accelerating the resolution of key technical challenges for stable use of brain-computer interfaces in real-world application scenarios.

Era of Opportunities:

Brain-Computer Interface Reaches Industrialization Tipping Point

The year 2026 is regarded as the "starting year" for the development of the global brain-computer interface industry, as the sector transitions from academic research to an accelerated application phase. Brain-computer interfaces have been included as a key future industry in China's "15th Five-Year Plan" and mentioned in government work reports, creating a three-dimensional resonance of technology, policy, and capital. During this historic window period, teams with top-tier academic expertise and highly efficient industrialization capabilities will be the first to stand out in the field. Focused on the forefront of life sciences, Fojian Capital consistently invests in innovations that genuinely address unmet clinical needs and promote high-quality development in healthcare. The establishment and growth of Brainsmart Technology align perfectly with Fojian Capital's long-term vision for next-generation medical technology.

Academic Foundation:

The Dual Endorsement of HKU and InnoHK Platform

Brainsmart Technology is led by Professor Guoliang Chen from the University of Hong Kong and was established under the InnoHK-ABIC platform supported by the Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Commission. Professor Chen also serves as the Executive Director of the Center for Advanced Biomedical Instrumentation in Hong Kong and the Director of the University of Hong Kong’s Central Cleanroom, achieving excellence in academic research, scientific management, and technology transfer. The Center for Advanced Biomedical Instrumentation, jointly established by the University of Hong Kong and Harvard University, is one of the core translational institutions on the Hong Kong InnoHK platform. This academic background provides Brainsmart Technology with world-class brain-computer interface engineering research capabilities, an intellectual property network both within and outside China, and extensive experience ranging from top-tier laboratories to clinical translation.

Industrialization Team:

Bridge the "Academia-Product-Clinical" Closed Loop

Brainsmart Technology has gathered serial entrepreneurs, top-tier institutional investors, senior executives from medical device listed companies, and frontline clinical experts, forming a multidisciplinary team with a full-stack industry perspective. The team adheres to industrial standards throughout the entire chain of research and development, productization, and commercialization, establishing a complete closed loop from cutting-edge academic exploration to medical-grade productization and then to scaled commercial operations. This profound industrial foundation ensures that invasive brain-computer interface technology can follow the most efficient path from the laboratory to the real world.

Technical Barriers:

Full-stack Electrode R&D System

Brainsmart Technology has built a full-stack research and development system in the electrode field, covering the brain surface and extending deep into the cortical interior.

High-Density Flexible ECoG Thin-Film Electrode: This product is placed epidurally on the brain, significantly reducing implantation trauma, immune response, and tissue damage while achieving higher-density neural signal acquisition per unit area. It effectively addresses the insufficient spatial resolution of traditional ECoG electrodes, enhancing the accuracy and reliability of neural intent decoding.

3D Intracortical Microneedle Electrode Array: To overcome the bottleneck of high-bandwidth neural signal acquisition, Brainsmart Technology is simultaneously advancing the development of a 3D intracortical microneedle electrode array. Leveraging expertise in novel flexible materials, advanced electrode structures, and 3D contact arrangements, this innovation is expected to enhance signal resolution while significantly reducing tissue damage. In the future, this array can be used in conjunction with high-density ECoG electrodes to form a "planar + vertical" three-dimensional neural signal acquisition system, capturing more comprehensive and abundant brain neural information.

Neural Foundation Model:

The Key Path to Cracking Decoding Challenges

Beyond hardware, the precise decoding of neural signals is the cornerstone for brain-computer interface systems to achieve functionality. For a long time, brain-computer interfaces have faced three major decoding challenges: signal drift and changes over time; differences in individual brain structures and characteristics; and significant variations in brain signal features across different tasks and scenarios. Traditional systems require the collection of large amounts of data for each user individually and frequent recalibration, resulting in high usage barriers and difficulties in promotion.

Currently, the neural foundation models built on large language model architectures and large-scale pre-training paradigms have been validated by the academic community as a key technical pathway. These models significantly reduce system calibration and training costs by learning universal neural representations across individuals, tasks, and time, driving brain-computer interfaces toward a "plug-and-play" application form. Brainsmart Technology has assembled a neural decoding algorithm team with backgrounds from Northwestern University, Stanford University, the University of Michigan, and Huawei, dedicated to building world-leading neural foundation models and exploring their deployment and application in long-duration, multi-task, and cross-individual scenarios.

Clinical初心:

Focus on Mind Voice and Mind Control

Leveraging the dual advantages of self-developed electrode devices and advanced neural decoding algorithms, Brainsmart Technology's first-generation product will deeply integrate hardware systems with neural foundation models, focusing on the medical rehabilitation sector. It zeroes in on two core application scenarios: first, thought-to-speech, helping patients who have lost the ability to speak due to stroke, ALS, etc., regain the ability to communicate; second, thought control, enabling patients with high-level paralysis or limb paralysis to directly drive external devices through brain signals, restoring independence in daily life and occupational capabilities.

Shenzhen-Hong Kong Collaboration:

Efficient R&D and Industrial Implementation Closed Loop

Brainsmart Technology has established a research and development system based on "Shenzhen-Hong Kong collaboration": The Hong Kong team focuses on the R&D of core electrode devices, analysis of neural mechanisms in brain-computer interfaces, and advanced decoding algorithm research, leveraging the world-class technical expertise in micro-nano processing from the Advanced Biomedical Instrumentation Center. The Shenzhen team is responsible for product engineering and industrial implementation, covering manufacturing processes, quality control, system integration, as well as animal experiments and clinical trials for commercialization efforts. With clear division of labor and complementary resources between the two locations, they form a complete value chain from fundamental research to clinical translation. Since its official establishment in 2025, Brainsmart Technology has completed core technology validation, product prototype design, formal testing, and multiple clinical studies within just one year, laying a solid foundation for subsequent large-scale clinical trials.
