On June 18, the “China Biopharmaceuticals Forum for Global Expansion,” co-hosted by Biologics Development Inc., Duoning Biotechnology, and E-Drug Manager, will be held in Shanghai.

Another Overseas Deal Sealed!

On May 27, MediLink and BioNTech reached an ADC licensing agreement worth $1.8 billion (approximately RMB 13 billion). Notably, this is not the first time MediLink has collaborated with BioNTech.

2024,China’s Innovation Surge Is Underway: Innovative Drug Companies Attract Continuous Capital Inflows as Multinational Corporations (MNCs) Scramble to Acquire Assets. The Wave of Chinese New Drugs Going Global Is Swelling Across a Broader Landscape.

This is reflected in two major dimensions: First, the diversification of project types has led to a broad expansion of overseas initiatives, primarily consisting of domestically developed innovative drugs, biosimilars, and improved new drugs. In addition to the highly prominent ADC sector, significant out-licensing deals have recently emerged in tracks such as GLP-1 therapies and molecular glues. During the same period, another “Chinese-origin” monoclonal antibody biosimilar received FDA approval for market launch. Second, destination selection has become more diverse. While striving to enter European and American markets, some companies are directly targeting emerging markets in Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

In 2024, the approaches to global expansion have also become more sophisticated.Beyond pure license-out deals or transactions structured under a “co-co” collaboration model, Hengrui recently achieved a $6 billion overseas deal for its self-developed GLP-1 product portfolio, pioneering a new strategic approach.

Nevertheless, the difficulties and challenges associated with the global expansion of China’s biopharmaceutical industry remain formidable obstacles for pharmaceutical companies. Not long ago, the approval of a domestically produced PD-1 combination therapy was delayed in the United States, and another company faced substantial claims after failing to secure a partnership with an overseas collaborator. These setbacks have once again prompted reflection within the industry. On the path to globalization, major hurdles related to product development, clinical trials, and commercialization still need to be overcome, while risks such as product returns, regulatory rejections, and delayed approvals persist.

So, how can companies seize global expansion opportunities and devise efficient R&D deployment strategies? How can they avoid major pitfalls in international markets? How should they select appropriate target destinations and regions for new drug launches? How can they strengthen supply chain management and collaboration? And how can they enhance regulatory affairs support capabilities while accumulating experience in communicating with local regulatory authorities...All issues urgently require the exploration of better solutions.

In response, the "China Biopharma Global Expansion Forum," co-hosted by Bio-Thera Solutions, Duoning Biology, and E-Drug Manager, will be held in Shanghai on the afternoon of June 18, 2024. The forum has invited key opinion leaders from major multinational pharmaceutical companies and local innovative drug enterprises, bringing together stakeholders across the entire industry chain. Founders of leading industry companies, heads of R&D pipelines, heads of manufacturing processes, and industry experts will convene to assess new trends in global expansion and explore pathways for innovative drugs and biosimilars going global, drawing on past experiences and lessons learned.

Meanwhile, we also hope to strengthen information exchange within the industry through this event, achieving win-win cooperation.
