Unlocking the Trillion-Yuan Elderly Care Market: How Brain-Computer Interfaces Are Empowering Rehabilitation

Jun 12, 2024 08:00 CST Updated 08:00

Recently, Elon Musk, founder of Tesla and SpaceX, announced on social media that Neuralink, his brain-computer interface (BCI) company, is poised to launch a “Blindsight” product designed to help blind individuals restore visual perception, following successful human trials of its BCI chip implant. On March 22, the first human participant to receive the Neuralink brain-computer interface implant posted their first message on a social media platform using thought control, while also demonstrating how to play chess and control video games via mind commands, showcasing the immense potential of brain-computer interface technology.

In August 2023, two studies published in Nature demonstrated that two patients with severe paralysis and an inability to speak were able to communicate with others with unprecedented accuracy and speech speed by using invasive brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). The two studies were conducted independently by research teams from Stanford University and the University of California, San Francisco, respectively.

With the continuous advancement of technology, brain-computer interface (BCI) technology is increasingly becoming a vital tool in the field of neurological rehabilitation, offering revolutionary therapeutic approaches for patients with neurological disorders or injuries. As a bridge connecting the brain to the external world, BCI technology enables efficient human-machine interaction by decoding brain activity and translating it into computer commands. In the realm of neurological rehabilitation, BCI technology is gradually emerging as a new hope for reshaping patients’ lives.

In this open lecture, we will explore how brain-computer interface (BCI) technology empowers the rehabilitation industry, along with its research progress, clinical applications, and market trends in the field of rehabilitation.
