In the rapidly evolving medical device market, China has become the world’s second-largest market, yet it still faces certain issues and challenges.First, the supply of high-end equipment is limited and primarily relies on imports; second, domestically produced alternatives can no longer serve as the driving force leading industry progress. Original innovation is the core source for the future development of the medical device industry. The underlying issue is mainly related to the innovation and R&D capabilities of the entire industry.
“From the perspective of innovative R&D, first, many companies are uncertain about what types of innovative products to develop, leading them to follow trends and imitate others. Second, even with innovative ideas, they often lack the technical R&D teams needed to bring these ideas to fruition. Furthermore, current innovative R&D relies heavily on academic research teams, which tend to propose innovations from a purely scientific standpoint, making it difficult to achieve genuine industrial commercialization.” This is how Feng Qingyu, founder of Qingdao Jianxin Medical Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Jianxin Medical”), described the challenges facing innovative R&D in China’s medical device sector. A former clinical physician who held positions at leading domestic and international medical companies early in his career, Feng began exploring the translation of scientific achievements into practical applications as early as 2015. It was then that he realizedScientific innovation and industrial implementation are “two different things.”

To better facilitate innovation,Jianxin Medical has established a unique model for patent analysis and R&D innovation, enabling it to precisely identify core clinical pain points—the very origin of innovation.in collaboration with related enterprisesCluster Analysis of Over 170,000 Clinical Invention Patents, indexing key information such as medical device classification, indications, and technical efficacy by anatomical site and disease; conducting in-depth analyses of technological development trends in specialized sectors; producing original analytical reports across multiple fields including stomatology, urology, orthopedics, thoracic surgery, and neurosurgery; establishing a patent analysis system centered on clinical pain points; and building an innovation model that drives product research and development through patent analysis.
Behind this, Jianxin Medical has resolved two core issues:First, how to identify genuine pain points in clinical practice. For example, through cluster analysis of patents filed by urologists over the past decade, they found that urological diseases are mainly concentrated in areas such as urinary stones, urological tumors, and urological inflammation. Further analysis revealed that the clinical pain points for urinary stones are focused on the treatment of ureteral stones, as there are currently no effective treatment methods. In other words, there is an urgent clinical need for a product that can address these pain points, which helped them identify the true direction for innovation in medical device products. The second is how to achieve truly original research and development.Taking urinary calculi as an example, and addressing clinical pain points, Jianxin Medical has determined the innovation direction for its product: developing an ultrasonic lithotripsy system suitable for ureteral stones. The company has completed product definition, formulated a comprehensive technical solution, and established an R&D team to steadily advance product development.
In Feng Qingyu’s view, the core of a business lies in delivering products that are genuinely needed in clinical practice and maintain consistent, stable quality. He has been relentlessly pursuing excellence in product development. After founding Shanghai Yichao Medical Device Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Yichao Medical”) in 2016, Feng established Jianxin Medical in 2022 (with Yichao Medical currently operating as a subsidiary of Jianxin Medical). Initially, he began with research and development (R&D), gradually exploring the commercialization pathway for original medical device products from R&D to mass production. As Jianxin Medical’s capabilities in R&D and manufacturing of original medical devices continued to strengthen, he developed a more ambitious vision: to replicate Jianxin Medical’s successful experience and help more enterprises develop original Chinese medical device products—Leveraging its medical device “Product Supermarket,” it reduces innovation risks and R&D expenditures for enterprises, shortens development cycles, and provides support for innovative R&D, mass production, and commercialization of medical device products, thereby driving the transformation of China’s medical device industry in collaboration with partners.
Jianxin Medical innovatively proposed the concept of a “Product Supermarket,” opening up its technology, resources, and services to engage in joint research and development with multiple enterprises, thereby facilitating the final commercialization and implementation of original Chinese medical device innovations.
To validate the feasibility of this model, Jianxin Medical started from scratch and went through the entire process of project initiation, design, R&D, clinical trials, regulatory approval, and production. Its first anti-adhesion ultrasonic energy system, designed for 5mm vessel cutting and hemostasis, has obtained the NMPA Class III medical device registration certificate and has achieved mass production and commercial deployment. It is reported that the product features an ultra-thin tip design, which effectively increases jaw pressure and enhances cutting speed. The blade is coated with a polymer nano anti-adhesion layer, enabling effective control of blade temperature and reducing tissue adhesion and smoke generation.
Regarding the R&D layout for innovative medical device products, Feng Qingyu offers unique insights. He pointed out, “The development of China’s medical device industry has evolved from low-value consumables to high-value consumables, from passive devices to active devices, from diagnosis to treatment, and from low-risk to high-risk categories. The field of surgical procedures will remain a highly promising area for innovation both now and in the future. Currently, surgical interventions encompass laparoscopic surgery, interventional procedures, and natural orifice surgeries. We are building our own platform-based products around these areas, striving to create an integrated clinical application loop that combines diagnosis and treatment.”
Currently,The intelligent dual-engine dynamic hybrid energy surgical system developed by Jianxin Medical for diverse clinical scenarios has been approved as a special project under the National Key R&D Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology and has entered the NMPA’s priority review green channel. In addition, several systems are currently under development, including a dual-probe, biplane 3D ultrasound visualization surgical platform that addresses the challenges of “temporal precision” and “spatial precision” in interventional procedures; a dual-frequency ultrasonic lithotripsy system suitable for ureteral stones with no thermal injury; and a multifunctional coagulation suction system capable of simultaneously performing clamping, irrigation, suction, and coagulation across all surgical scenarios. It is reported thatJianxin Medical has filed 118 patents centered on product R&D, with invention patents accounting for over 40%.
Creating a “Product Supermarket” is tied to Feng Qingyu’s understanding of the core essence of the medical device industry. “The current problem in the industry is that while many products successfully complete R&D, very few actually make it to mass production.”
To this end, after addressing key R&D challenges, Qingdao Jianxin Medical Technology Co., Ltd. actively sought solutions and established diverse collaborations with multiple internationally renowned enterprises and listed companies, building a robust system for R&D, production, operations, and supply chain management. These includeCollaborate with leading international manufacturing enterprises to establish a high-end medical device R&D, production, and manufacturing center, ensuring genuine product commercialization.Leveraging its robust in-house R&D capabilities and the strong manufacturing prowess of its partner enterprises, Qingdao Jianxin Medical Technology Co., Ltd. fully capitalizes on the complementary strengths of both parties across product R&D and design, system integration, performance optimization and validation, as well as raw material development, processing technologies, and manufacturing processes. By establishing a “full-stack” R&D and manufacturing model and fostering collaborative innovation, the company delivers original, “product-grade” solutions to the global market. In partnership with its collaborators, Qingdao Jianxin Medical is achieving high-quality, high-efficiency R&D and manufacturing of original medical device products.
Leading the pack is not the ultimate goal for Jianxin Medical; rather, its pursuit is to drive “overtaking on a straight track” across China’s entire original medical device industry. With an open mindset, Jianxin Medical actively promotes diverse collaborations and multi-party alliances within the medical device sector, establishing a core model of “shared technological assets.”
“Unlike the sharing of patented technologies for component drawings in traditional device manufacturing, technological collaboration in the new era may increasingly involve the sharing of foundational technologies, such as Huawei’s Intelligent Cockpit, BYD’s e-Platform, and Xiaomi’s In-Vehicle Infotainment System.” Feng Qingyu noted that what his company is currently doing is similar, except thatQingdao Jianxin Medical Technology Co., Ltd. aims to become the “Huawei Smart Cockpit” of the original research sector for high-end domestically produced medical devices, providing the industry with “full-stack” original product-level solutions. Each partner is deeply involved, leveraging their respective strengths to jointly develop innovative products, with subsequent revenue sharing based on each party’s R&D contributions.
Notably, in recognition of the manufacturing needs of certain enterprises for medical device products, Jianxin Medical’s “technology asset sharing” initiative extends beyond joint R&D of original products to include the manufacturing of high-end medical devices, with the ultimate goal of achieving stable and consistent mass production.
Currently, Jianxin Medical’s approved ultrasonic energy system has been adopted by multiple domestic surgical robot manufacturers and has achieved technical collaborations with internationally renowned companies and listed enterprises. Additionally, negotiations are underway for collaborations on several original medical device products, and significant partnership announcements are expected to be made public in the near future.
To change the current situation in which the medical device industry is dominated by low- and mid-end products while high-end devices rely on imports, it is undoubtedly necessary to guide more advantageous resources toward areas that urgently require innovation, thereby avoiding the vortex of redundant investment, resource waste, and low-quality innovation across the entire industry.
To drive innovation and development across the entire industry, relying solely on the “Product Supermarket” is insufficient; achieving industrial transformation requires concerted efforts from all stakeholders in the medical device sector to jointly build an innovative ecosystem.
