Digital Empowerment in Elderly Care and Rehabilitation: Innovating the Future | Forum on Clinical Applications and Industry Trends of Digital Health and Rehabilitation
As China enters an era of “deep aging,” the proportion of its population aged 65 and above reached 15.4% in 2023, a level that ranks among the upper-middle tier globally. This trend has been exacerbated by declining birth rates and the continuous increase in life expectancy. According to the “China Population Forecast Report 2023” by Yuwa Population Research, China will become a super-aged society with more than 20% of its population aged 65 and above by 2030; this proportion is projected to continue rising rapidly, potentially reaching approximately 37.4% by 2060. Characterized by its large scale, rapid pace, advanced age structure, and regional disparities, China’s aging population poses unprecedented challenges to socioeconomic development and healthcare services.
In June 2021, eight national ministries and commissions jointly issued the "Opinions on Accelerating the Development of Rehabilitation Medical Services," setting the tone for the rapid advancement of the rehabilitation sector in the next phase. The document emphasized the necessity of establishing a three-tier rehabilitation network, clarified the importance of early rehabilitation intervention, multidisciplinary collaboration, and the management of complex and critical cases requiring rehabilitation. Under the guidance of these policies, rehabilitation medical services have gradually become a key component in addressing the challenges of an aging society.
With the development and widespread adoption of digital technologies and mobile internet, the deep integration of digital therapeutics with rehabilitation and wellness is reshaping traditional rehabilitation models, becoming a key driver of innovation in this field. Digital therapeutics have not only expanded application scenarios for rehabilitation and wellness but also significantly improved diagnostic and treatment efficiency. Notably, they have achieved remarkable results in areas such as musculoskeletal rehabilitation, gradually gaining recognition in clinical practice. Digital technology has injected new vitality into rehabilitation and wellness, enabling it to better meet the needs of an aging society and provide more precise and efficient rehabilitation solutions for the elderly population.
