In 1946, the first World Health Assembly designated October 13 as “World Health Day,” advocating for commemorative activities worldwide to raise awareness of the importance of health. This year’s theme is “Maintain Health, Start Now.” Achieving a longer, healthier, and more fulfilling life has become a critical issue for global public health, aligning closely with the traditional Chinese concept of “prolonging life and enhancing longevity.”

In the field of biology, numerous authoritative studies have revealed various genes and mechanisms that influence longevity. The following are some key research findings:

  • Environmental factors such as diet, stress, temperature, and social interaction also have a significant impact on longevity;[1]

  • Overexpression of specific genes, such as SIRT6, can significantly extend lifespan, indicating that genes play a crucial role in regulating the aging process;[2]

  • Signaling pathways such as insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) play a key role in regulating mitochondrial function and lifespan;[3]

Thus, the relationship between longevity and mitochondria is a complex and important area of research. Optimization of mitochondrial function is considered one of the key approaches to extending lifespan.

In 2023, a research finding on the “Relationship Between Mitochondria and Aging” publicly released by the Buck Institute for Research on Aging in the United States sparked significant repercussions in the scientific community.[4]

In this clinical study, researchers were surprised to find that the mitochondrial size in aging experimental C. elegans was significantly reduced. However, after activating key genetic signals for mitochondrial fission, the mitochondria in the nematodes showed improvement, resulting in a 40% extension in lifespan. Moreover, the survival rate of Experimental Group 3 was 300% that of the normal control group.

Subsequently, the Russian Academy of Sciences and the UCL Cancer Institute at University College London jointly released an in-depth statistical study that revealed the link between mitochondria and human longevity.[5]

This study, initiated in 2003, enrolled 9,360 participants who were stratified into 10 groups based on their mitochondrial levels, and a 15-year follow-up study was conducted.

The study results showed that, after comparing participants in the lowest and highest mitochondrial count groups, the mortality rate in the former was 2.35 times that of the latter. Specifically, individuals with lower mitochondrial counts faced a 92% increased risk of death from cardiovascular diseases and a 266% increased risk of death from cancer.

Mitochondrial Supplement NMN: Boost NAD+, Improve Mitochondrial Health, and Delay Aging

Mitochondria, as the "powerhouses" of human cells, play a pivotal role in sustaining vital activities and promoting longevity. To enhance mitochondrial function, researchers have explored various approaches, among which supplementation with NMN (β-nicotinamide mononucleotide) has garnered significant attention.

NMN is the direct precursor of NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), a crucial coenzyme indispensable for mitochondrial metabolism. Appropriate supplementation with NMN can effectively elevate intracellular NAD+ levels, thereby activating a series of NAD+-dependent enzymes, particularly longevity-associated proteins such as Sirt3. These enzymes help restore the normal function of mitochondrial proteins by removing acetylation modifications, thus enhancing mitochondrial efficiency, optimizing energy production, and potentially mitigating age-related decline.

Taking Japan, the country with the highest life expectancy globally, as an example, in March 2020, Japan revised the “List of Ingredients (Raw Materials) Not Classified as Pharmaceuticals Provided That No Pharmaceutical Functions or Efficacies Are Claimed.”[6], thereby officially approving NMN in Japan for use as a food ingredient and expanding its application scope within the Japanese food sector. On August 16, 2024, Japan’s Consumer Affairs Agency (CAA) granted its first approval for NMN with triple functional properties as a “functional” food ingredient, formally incorporating it into the category of foods with function claims.

On July 27, 2024, the Japanese financial publication Weekly Toyo Keizai published an article titled “The NMN Anti-Aging Craze,” reporting that the market size for NMN in Japan had reached tens of billions of yen and continued to grow.

NMN Purity Stabilized at 99.9%, with Continued Focus on the Global Market

In the early stages of large-scale NMN production, chemical synthesis was the predominant method, particularly before 2010. This approach utilized raw materials such as adenosine monophosphate (AMP), tetraacetylribose, and nicotinamide (NAM) to synthesize NMN through complex chemical reactions. However, due to challenges associated with chemical synthesis, including low yields and environmental pollution, researchers have shifted their focus toward biosynthetic methods in an effort to identify new avenues for enhancing NMN production.

Nanjing InnovaSyn Biotech Inc. (hereinafter referred to as “InnovaSyn Biotech”) is one of the companies that have achieved significant results in this field.

Since its establishment in March 2013, InnovaSyn Biotech Inc. has centered on synthetic biology technology, focusing on the research, development, and production of synthetic biological solutions.
