How Can Artificial Intelligence Promote the High-Quality Development of Eye Health Medical Service Systems? Professor Bi Hongsheng, Chairman of the Ophthalmology Professional Committee of the China Association of Integrative Medicine, Deputy Leader of the National Technical Guidance Group for Blindness Prevention under the National Health Commission, and Vice President of the Ophthalmologist Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association; as well as Dean of the Affiliated Eye Hospital and School of Ophthalmology and Optometry of Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Director of the Shandong Provincial Institute of Ophthalmic Disease Prevention and Control, shared insights on the application of AI in myopia prevention and control among children and adolescents, as well as in fundus disease screening: “AI can effectively improve diagnostic accuracy. For instance, in the three stages of myopia management—screening, prevention, and treatment—a data-driven ‘three-tier early warning’ system with self-learning capabilities can predict whether students will develop pseudo-myopia or true myopia within six months to a year. This includes predictions of the prevalence rates of true myopia, pseudo-myopia, and pre-clinical myopia, with an accuracy exceeding 90%, laying a solid foundation for early prevention and control. Regarding early screening and diagnosis of blinding eye diseases in China, studies have shown that AI algorithm models achieve an accuracy of 95.3%–99.9% in distinguishing ten types of fundus diseases. Their diagnostic capability is comparable to that of senior fundus specialists, while reducing screening time by approximately 75%. Artificial intelligence helps address the shortage of ophthalmic medical resources, making standardized and convenient fundus screening possible.”

Amid the trend of population aging, China’s cancer burden continues to intensify. Zhang Kai, Deputy Director of the Department of Cancer Prevention at the National Cancer Center/Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, stated, “Early screening, early diagnosis, and early treatment are effective approaches to alleviating the cancer burden. These measures not only provide patients with a chance of cure but also significantly reduce the financial burden on families. With the increasing adoption of more precise non-invasive initial cancer screening methods, including liquid biopsy, a greater number of high-risk individuals are participating in early screening programs, thereby improving screening efficacy and accelerating the rapid development of early detection initiatives.”

Ikang, which has possessed a strong Internet DNA since its inception, has been advancing over the past two decades with the mission of “driving the transformation of health and medical service models through innovative technology.” As early as 2017, Ikang, standing from the user’s perspective, launched its “managed” physical examination service through a strategic upgrade, truly elevating physical examinations into comprehensive health management services.

In 2018, to build a “bridge” between prevention and clinical care and address issues such as diagnostic gaps in routine health examinations for certain major diseases, iKang fully launched the iKang AI+ Initiative. Over the past six years, it has successively introduced more than 10 artificial intelligence products covering specialized screenings for the fundus, breast, heart, cerebrovascular system, teeth, and bones, establishing an initially scaled “iKang AI Matrix.” The company has provided AI-driven and genetic testing services to tens of millions of individuals.

In 2021, Ikang completed the deployment of its medical cloud, establishing the first cloud platform in China’s health examination industry to serve tens of millions of users. To date, it has aggregated approximately 70 million sets of big data from health examinations. “Prior to 2021, Ikang’s 154 health examination, dental, and medical centers across 59 cities nationwide conducted image interpretation independently. After migrating to the cloud, these operations have been consolidated into 16 centralized image interpretation centers, covering 173 health examination, dental, and medical centers in 57 cities across China as of now. Currently, data from every X-ray, CT scan, MRI, and electrocardiogram (ECG) performed at Ikang is transmitted to the cloud in real time. AI software deployed on the cloud performs initial screening and classification of this information. This not only enables real-time access to examination results and enhances diagnostic accuracy through AI-assisted image interpretation, but also facilitates intelligent prediction of health risks, allowing physicians to make targeted assessments of pathological changes based on these data and annotations. Through the Ikang Zhihuikang Cloud IaaS Open Platform, these capabilities are shared with third-party health examination centers and healthcare institutions,” introduced Zhang Ligang.

Leveraging medical AI and digitalization to provide more comprehensive health protection for customers has become a core competency of Ikang’s development. To maximize the accessibility of healthcare, and building on its years of forward-looking layout and practical experience in AI-empowered health management, Ikang has chosen to launch the Ikang Zhihui Kangyun IaaS Open Platform on its 20th anniversary. This initiative aims to popularize high-quality, AI-enhanced medical resources for a broader population by fostering a new ecosystem within the physical examination industry.
