Academician Qiao Jie stated that Peking University has always attached great importance to the development of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine. In 2023, Peking University First Hospital and Peking University Third Hospital were selected as pilot units for national-level “flagship” hospitals promoting the integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine. In the same year, multiple departments in these two hospitals, as well as in Peking University People’s Hospital, were successfully approved as Beijing municipal-level construction units for “flagship” departments integrating traditional Chinese and Western medicine, thereby effectively advancing collaborative efforts between the two medical systems. This year marks a critical juncture for achieving the objectives and tasks outlined in the 14th Five-Year Plan. Recently, President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter to the 2024 World Traditional Medicine Conference, providing clear direction for Peking University Health Science Center to inherit, develop, and utilize traditional medicine effectively. Peking University Health Science Center will continue to engage in theoretical research and practical exploration of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine, offering insights and support to advance its development. By doing so, it aims to lay a solid foundation for cultural confidence, comprehensively promote the Healthy China initiative, and contribute to better safeguarding the health of the people.

Deputy Director-General Dong Yunlong stated that in recent years, the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (NATCM), in collaboration with relevant departments, has thoroughly studied and implemented the important instructions of General Secretary Xi Jinping, promoting the Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine (TCM-WM) Advancement Project. Jointly with the National Health Commission and other agencies, the NATCM has established the National Center for Integrated TCM and Western Medicine, and developed “flagship” hospitals and departments specializing in integrated TCM-WM care. It has organized and implemented the key special project on “Modernization of Traditional Chinese Medicine” under the National Key R&D Program, and launched high-level training initiatives such as the Research Program for Outstanding Western Medicine Professionals Learning TCM in the New Era. As a century-old medical institution, Peking University Health Science Center has played a demonstrative and leading role in advancing the coordinated development of TCM and Western medicine, accelerating innovation in medical science and technology, and cultivating outstanding medical talent. Moving forward, the NATCM will work with relevant departments to explore new pathways for the innovative development of integrated TCM-WM practice.
