The medical campus includes 24-hour emergency medicine, a bariatric surgery center, women’s services, the White Crane Landing Obstetrics and Gynecology Center, cardiology, oncology, and surgical services, including an orthopedic specialty center and an outpatient surgery center designated as a Center of Excellence by the American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery (AIMIS).

Acute Care Hospital Operator
Duke University Announces Plan to Acquire Lake Norman Regional Medical Center from Community Health Systems (CHS) for $280 MillionRecently, Duke University announced its intention to acquire Lake Norman Regional Medical Center, a facility under Community Health Systems (CHS), for $280 million. The acquisition covers all assets of Lake Norman Regional Medical Center and marks a significant expansion beyond the Triangle region. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2025.
$15.3 Billion in Debt, Asset Sales for Self-Rescue
As the second-largest for-profit hospital chain in the United States, Community Health Systems (CHS) operates 69 affiliated hospitals across 15 states, with more than 11,000 beds, and manages over 1,000 healthcare sites, including general acute care hospitals and specialty hospitals, physician clinics, urgent care centers, freestanding emergency departments, occupational medicine clinics, imaging centers, and cancer centers.
However, due to the impact of payers’ tightening reimbursement policies on the broader hospital environment and CHS’s own insufficient strategic layout, the number of patients served and revenue at CHS have continued to decline since 2016, further deteriorating its cash payment capability. In 2016, CHS’s inpatient admissions decreased by 8.8%, and total patient days dropped by 8%. Regarding inpatient admissions, they fell by 11% year-over-year in both the first and second quarters of 2017 compared to the same periods in 2016.
As early as 2016, CHS reported a net loss of $1.7 billion, with total debt reaching $15 billion. In the first quarter of 2024, CHS’s total liabilities amounted to $15.3 billion, including $11.5 billion in long-term debt.
To alleviate its debt burden, on November 22, 2024, CHS sold certain assets of ShorePoint Health Port Charlotte and ShorePoint Health Punta Gorda to Adventist Health System Sunbelt Healthcare Corporation for $265 million in cash.
The sale of Lake Norman Regional Medical Center is also intended to streamline operations. According to official disclosures, the proceeds from the sale will provide Community Health Systems (CHS) with additional capital to invest in its remaining hospitals and healthcare facilities, enhance patient care, and reduce debt.
Duke University School of Medicine: Excelling in Both Clinical Practice and Innovation
Duke University, founded in 1838, is a world-class research university. The Duke University School of Medicine, its flagship school, ranks among the top three medical institutions in the United States, trailing only Harvard University and Johns Hopkins University. It has conducted extensive and innovative research in fields such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and neuroscience.
This September, a research team from Duke University School of Medicine published their latest findings in Science Advances, revealing an estrogen-driven oncogenic mechanism: estrogen can simultaneously reduce eosinophils in both the periphery and tumor sites, thereby suppressing anti-tumor immune responses. Effective inhibition of estrogen receptors (ER) and blockade of estrogen signaling facilitate the efficacy of immune checkpoint blockers (ICB). These advancements not only propel progress in medical science but also provide a rich technological reserve for innovation incubation.
In terms of clinical services, Duke University Hospital fulfills the clinical teaching mission of Duke University School of Medicine, providing clinical practical training for nearly 2,000 medical students. Additionally, it trains numerous residents and fellows, supplying a substantial number of highly skilled professionals to the medical field.
To date, Duke University Hospital is a large, comprehensive medical and surgical facility with 1,062 inpatient beds. The hospital features a regional emergency/trauma center, a large surgical suite with 51 operating rooms, an endoscopy center, an ambulatory surgery center with nine operating rooms, and extensive diagnostic and interventional radiology services.
Following its acquisition of CHS Hospital, Duke University has introduced its cutting-edge medical research findings into the hospital, including advanced technologies and treatment protocols in fields such as cancer therapy and cardiovascular disease research. From a talent development perspective, Duke University also gains access to a more diverse range of clinical cases at CHS Hospital, thereby accumulating richer clinical experience. This further promotes the deep integration of theory and practice, as well as the translation of innovative technologies into clinical applications.
Multiple Chinese Universities Acquire Hospitals
As the integration between medical education and healthcare services deepens, many prestigious universities in China are accelerating the promotion of medical technology innovation and clinical services by acquiring hospitals.
In 2024, East China Normal University acquired two hospitals in Changning District, Shanghai—the Changning District Maternal and Child Health Hospital and the Changning District Mental Health Center—officially designating them as affiliated hospitals of East China Normal University. Among these, the Changning District Maternal and Child Health Hospital is a specialized maternal and child health institution that integrates medical care, health maintenance, disease prevention, scientific research, and teaching. The hospital comprises 12 clinical departments and 5 medical technology departments, with an annual outpatient and emergency visit volume of approximately 640,000 and an annual delivery volume of around 12,000.
This provides a practical base for clinical teaching and scientific research at the School of Medicine, East China Normal University. By integrating the high-quality medical resources of these two hospitals, the School of Medicine, East China Normal University, is able to conduct more in-depth teaching and research in fields such as obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, and mental health.
Meanwhile, Hunan University has also been making significant strides in the medical field. Since 2023, Hunan University has successively acquired Xiangtan Central Hospital and Changsha No. 3 Hospital.
The Significance and Advantages of Universities Acquiring Hospitals Are Self-Evident.
On the one hand, by integrating hospital resources, universities can further enhance the clinical teaching and research capabilities of their medical schools, cultivating more medical professionals with practical experience and innovative abilities. On the other hand, university acquisitions of hospitals also help promote reform and development in the healthcare industry, improve the quality and efficiency of medical services, and provide society with higher-quality medical resources and technological innovations.
