Ongericimab Launches Nationally with First Prescriptions, Marking a New Era in Lipid Management

Jan 23, 2025 09:52 CST Updated 09:52

As the 2025 Lunar New Year approached, the field of cardiovascular disease treatment witnessed a significant milestone. Today, the first prescription for Ongericimab was issued at Beijing Fuwai Hospital, marking the formal initiation of this innovative drug in clinical practice. It will provide a more potent therapeutic option for lipid management and offer a new solution to alleviate the burden of cardiovascular disease in China.

Meanwhile, the first prescriptions for Ongericimab have been sequentially issued in various provinces at institutions including Henan Provincial People’s Hospital, Qilu Hospital of Shandong University, The First Hospital of Lanzhou University in Gansu Province, The First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University in Shaanxi Province, The First Affiliated Hospital of Air Force Medical University, Jilin Central Hospital, and Xinqiao Hospital Affiliated to Army Medical University in Chongqing. This signifies that Ongericimab, as an innovative PCSK9 inhibitor, is serving a broader patient population across more regions. Ongericimab offers dosing regimens of once monthly (two injections per dose) or twice monthly (one injection per dose), enabling patients to self-administer the medication at home. This flexibility facilitates long-term adherence to lipid-lowering therapy.

Professor Li Jianjun, a renowned expert in the field of cardiovascular metabolism at Fuwai Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, stated: “Cardiovascular disease is a major public health issue globally and a significant health challenge in China. In recent years, the disability and mortality rates among urban and rural residents have continued to rise due to the increasing incidence of cardiovascular diseases, with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) being particularly prominent, posing a serious threat to the life and health of the population. Anguieriximab is another innovative domestic PCSK9 inhibitor. Data from large-scale Phase III clinical trials have demonstrated that it can significantly reduce low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels, maintaining a stable reduction throughout the study period, while also markedly improving other lipid parameters. It is gratifying to see the approval of Anguieriximab for market launch. The successful commercialization and widespread clinical application of innovative domestic drugs are key to further enhancing the prevention and treatment capabilities for cerebrovascular and cardiovascular diseases, effectively helping to bring about an early ‘turning point’ in cardiovascular events. I hope that Anguieriximab will benefit a broad patient population as soon as possible.”

Currently, cardiovascular diseases, primarily atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), are the leading cause of death among both urban and rural residents in China, accounting for more than 40% of all causes of death. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] are major risk factors for ASCVD. Therefore, controlling LDL-C at lower levels while reducing Lp(a) to mitigate residual cardiovascular risk is key to the prevention and treatment of ASCVD. Studies have shown that, compared with placebo, ongericimab can significantly reduce LDL-C levels by more than 60% and lower Lp(a) levels by up to 67.5%.

Ongericimab has seen its first prescriptions issued across various provinces in China, marking not only an innovative breakthrough in the pharmacological treatment of cardiovascular diseases but also providing a powerful therapeutic tool for the management of dyslipidemia. By offering a more effective and safer lipid-lowering medication to patients with dyslipidemia and cardiovascular diseases, it is poised to deliver greater clinical benefits and enhance the health and well-being of a broad patient population.
