The Future of Digital Health: Potential, Challenges, and Pathways

On January 23, Italian Minister of Health Orazio Schillaci delivered the opening remarks at a dialogue session focused on pathways for scaling digital health. Subsequently, Ms. Gong Rujing joined H.E. Mansoor Al-Mansoori, Chairman of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, and Peter Sands, Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, in a roundtable discussion. They engaged in an in-depth exchange of practices and insights on advancing the large-scale adoption of digital health. The session was moderated by John Halamka, President of the Mayo Clinic Platform. Additionally, Ms. Gong Rujing convened a panel discussion addressing topics such as data standardization, trust, and data security.

Currently, digital health is profoundly transforming the global healthcare ecosystem by facilitating better integration of medical data, enhancing decision-making capabilities, and driving the development of personalized medicine. As a pioneer in this field, Yidu Tech boasts extensive accumulated medical expertise, has made long-term investments in proprietary AI technology research, and has dedicated substantial resources over the past decade to advancing intelligent data governance. Its core algorithm engine, YiduCore, has cumulatively processed and analyzed more than 5.5 billion authorized medical records, thereby providing robust data support for precision medicine.

By driving the implementation of cutting-edge technologies in the healthcare industry, Yidu Tech has gradually formed a full-industry-chain closed loop covering “healthcare providers, pharmaceutical companies, insurers, and patients,” thereby significantly promoting the scaled development of digital health.

In the realm of regional population health management, Yidu Tech has assisted in building urban “Health Brains,” with multiple benchmark projects successfully implemented in cities such as Beijing and Ningbo, providing robust support for improving overall regional health outcomes.

In the field of AI-enabled clinical research, Yidu Tech has assisted research experts and physicians in publishing over 240 high-impact papers, accelerating the translation and application of research outcomes.

In the field of new drug development, Yidu Tech provides clinical trial services to globally renowned pharmaceutical companies, leveraging advanced AI technologies to optimize trial processes, reduce costs, and ultimately accelerate the market launch of new drugs for the benefit of patients.

In the health insurance sector, Yidu Tech leverages AI technology to design more suitable insurance products for high-risk populations. The company has deeply cultivated “Hui Min Bao” (inclusive supplemental medical insurance) projects in developed Chinese provinces and cities such as Beijing and Shenzhen, cumulatively serving over 34 million insured individuals and providing protection to countless families.

Furthermore, EVYD, a subsidiary of Yidu Tech, has partnered with the Ministry of Health of Brunei Darussalam to develop a one-stop application for population-wide health management and services. This initiative provides the people of Brunei with a comprehensive, personalized, and engaging health management experience, thereby enhancing overall public health levels.

While driving the continuous implementation of technology in specific medical scenarios, Ms. Gong Rujing is also well aware that the healthcare industry is a highly specialized and complex sector. Innovators in the digital health field still face numerous practical challenges in promoting and scaling new technologies, such as data interoperability and data security.

In an interview with the media, Ms. Gong Rujing stated that China’s policy formulation and industry guidance in areas such as personal information security protection and medical data management have provided strong support for the development of AI in healthcare and corporate innovation. She called for close global collaboration to advance digital health, urging diverse stakeholders—including governments, enterprises, medical institutions, and researchers—to actively engage and join forces in promoting the healthy and sustainable development of digital health.

Leadership Resilience: Leading Innovation Amid Challenges

On January 24, Ms. Gong Rujing, as a representative of female leaders, joined Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales and Otto Sonnenholzner, former Vice President of Ecuador and an expert in international economic affairs, to discuss how leaders can maintain resilience and guide their teams toward innovation and breakthroughs in a complex, volatile, and challenging environment.

Since its inception, Yidu Tech has remained committed to doing the difficult yet right things, steadfastly pursuing a path in serious healthcare. The decision to enter the medical industry stemmed from Gong Rujing’s recognition of the challenges facing China’s healthcare system. As population aging intensifies, medical demands are becoming increasingly diverse and elevated, while high-quality medical resources remain relatively scarce. She aspires to leverage technology to break the “impossible triangle” in the healthcare industry, making medical services more precise and accessible to a broader population, so that everyone can enjoy more affordable, high-quality care. It is this original aspiration, filled with empathy and a sense of responsibility, that has sustained her and her team on their journey forward.

She candidly admitted that when facing challenges and changes, she often had no time to dwell on gender or maternal identity labels. “Achieving work-life balance is an enduring challenge for me; I must focus entirely on leading my team to tackle complex problems.” During the pandemic, Yidu Tech responded swiftly by leveraging artificial intelligence technology to assist relevant institutions in promptly addressing and controlling infection risks, providing technical support for epidemic prevention and control decision-making, and optimizing resource allocation. Meanwhile, Yidu Tech also intensified its efforts in new drug development, employing Decentralized Clinical Trial (DCT) solutions to facilitate the regulatory approval and market launch of Simnotrelvir, China’s first innovative 3CL-targeted anti-COVID-19 drug.

In expanding into overseas markets, Ms. Gong Rujing has also demonstrated the unique resilience characteristic of female leaders. She noted that entering new markets requires adapting to novel legal and cultural environments, establishing effective communication with local employees and regulatory authorities, and continuously iterating and optimizing solutions. “Female leaders tend to place greater emphasis on details and relationship-building in such contexts,” she observed. In the face of diverse market conditions and regulatory requirements, Yidu Tech has maintained strong adaptability and resilience, successfully penetrating markets in Brunei, Singapore, and the United States, while actively expanding its presence in Japan, Europe, and other Southeast Asian countries that prioritize the development of medical technology.

She stated that China’s fiercely competitive market environment has provided Yidu Tech with valuable opportunities for growth, forging a resilient and hardworking team. “Overseas observers now regard Chinese tech companies as highly competitive, precisely because China itself is a fully competitive market.”

During her few days at the Winter Davos meeting, Ms. Gong Rujing also attended strategic dialogues in Vietnam, Malaysia, Spain, Argentina, Thailand, and other countries, as well as multiple closed-door sessions and key meetings, engaging in in-depth exchanges with prime ministers, ministers, representatives of leading enterprises, and global leaders from academia. Reflecting on her participation in Winter Davos, she expressed that it was a great honor to speak on behalf of China’s AI healthcare industry, and she looks forward to further strengthening communication and cooperation with all parties to jointly advance medical technology.

At the Davos Forum, a global platform, Ms. Gong Rujing’s presentation not only showcased Yidu Tech’s innovative practices and expertise in AI-driven healthcare but also highlighted the rising prominence of Chinese technology companies on the world stage. We look forward to Yidu Tech continuing to drive the development of AI in healthcare and making even greater contributions to human health. Meanwhile, we are confident that under the leadership of change-makers like Ms. Gong Rujing, China’s AI healthcare sector will demonstrate greater resilience and innovation, providing robust support in addressing global health challenges.
