Diabetes Data Management Service Provider

Diabetes, a chronic disease afflicting hundreds of millions of people worldwide. According to data released by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), global healthcare expenditures for adult diabetes patients reached $966 billion in 2021 and are projected to exceed $1 trillion by 2030. Meanwhile, disease management remains cumbersome and complex. Traditional blood glucose monitoring methods are not only inefficient but also create significant barriers to communication between patients and physicians. In the field of diabetes management, the application of digital health technologies has become a key breakthrough for future industry competition.

Founded in 2010, Glooko leverages mobile devices and cloud computing technology to connect patients, physicians, and medical devices, enabling seamless collection, analysis, and sharing of diabetes data. To date, Glooko’s diabetes management platform has been used by more than 4.4 million people with diabetes worldwide and deployed in over 10,000 clinics globally. The platform has also been utilized in more than 20 clinical trials to facilitate patient recruitment and data collection.

Leverage MeterSync™ Technology to Build a Unified Diabetes Management System

Digital Technologies Reshape the Chronic Disease Management Ecosystem. As diabetes is one of the primary conditions in chronic disease management, a digital ecosystem for diabetes care has also been established. Building on this foundation, Glooko leverages its MeterSync™ technology to enable patients with diabetes to seamlessly synchronize blood glucose data across devices.

Specifically, patients can easily transmit data from over 25 different brands of blood glucose meters directly to more than 30 models of Apple or Android smartphones. This functionality is made possible by Glooko’s acquisition of data specifications and standard licenses from major blood glucose meter manufacturers, enabling its product to be compatible with approximately 80% of the blood glucose meters on the market.

Subsequently, through the Glooko™ app, patients with diabetes can enjoy more convenient and comprehensive health management services. They can not only record key information such as carbohydrate intake, insulin usage, and medication adherence on the app, but also view charts and statistical data generated from historical records in real time. In addition, patients can share their health reports with their primary care physicians via email, print, or fax, facilitating timely information sharing.

Furthermore, Glooko’s mobile and cloud-based solutions provide support to healthcare institutions. Among these, the Glooko Population Tracker™—a patient population tracking and management system—enables institutions to collect and analyze big data, thereby facilitating decision-making. Through this system, institutions can more precisely implement stratified risk management for diabetic populations, enhancing the overall standard of care.

In terms of information security, Glooko consistently regards the protection of patient data as the cornerstone of its business. To this end, Glooko has achieved HIPAA compliance, ensuring full adherence to U.S. government regulations and standards concerning medical privacy and security, thereby safeguarding the integrity and confidentiality of patient data.

Currently, Glooko is advancing to the next stage of health data tracking technology—predictive care. By fully leveraging patient data and providing healthcare institutions with patient insights and decision-support algorithms, Glooko enables more precise diabetes care. Meanwhile, Glooko offers health systems and disease management organizations a more efficient tool for population management and analytics, helping them focus greater attention on high-risk patients and improve long-term adherence to treatment plans.

System Receives FDA Approval, Accelerating Product Upgrades

In 2018, Glooko’s innovative mobile insulin dosing system received FDA approval. Designed for patients with type 2 diabetes to titrate long-acting insulin, the system automatically retrieves blood glucose data from users’ glucometers, insulin pumps, insulin pens, or continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems, thereby eliminating the cumbersome step of manually entering fasting blood glucose values. By intelligently analyzing blood glucose levels in accordance with healthcare institutions’ treatment plans and clinical guidelines, the system also recommends corresponding insulin dose adjustments.

Notably, Glooko employs a distinctive business model. Rather than selling its products directly to patients, it markets to healthcare system stakeholders, such as physicians and clinics, who then provide the solution to their patients. In terms of pricing, Glooko charges healthcare systems a monthly subscription fee based on the number of patients.

The primary reason is that Glooko’s solution is built upon its core resources and key partners. Core resources—including database management, hospital relationships, analytics development, and clinic physicians—deliver convenient data management and analytics services to patients with diabetes through various channels, such as mobile apps, enterprise-grade meter reading systems, and blood glucose meters. In terms of key activities, Glooko focuses on upload rate prediction, data analytics, and data sharing, while collaborating closely with professionals such as hospital administrators and insurance companies.

Glooko has been actively expanding its footprint through strategic acquisitions. In January 2022, it announced the acquisition of xbird, a German artificial intelligence-based diabetes management company. xbird monitors patient activity using sensors and wearable devices, leverages artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies to identify potential issues, and alerts users to take action. Glooko plans to integrate xbird’s software into its platform to further enhance its analytical capabilities. In March of the same year, Glooko announced the acquisition of DIABNEXT, a French company that helps patients manage diabetes through a digital health platform. DIABNEXT’s mobile application will complement Glooko’s product portfolio by monitoring patient data and providing remote care services.

Furthermore, Glooko has spared no effort in pursuing mergers and partnerships. In September 2016, it merged with Diasend to form a single company operating under the Glooko name. The combined platform enables data downloads from more than 160 different devices, covering over 95% of diabetes devices worldwide. In May 2021, Glooko announced a collaboration with Eli Lilly and Company to provide services for patients with diabetes using Lilly’s connected insulin pens.

Domestic Companies Accelerate Their Strategic Layout

Globally, the diabetes management market is undoubtedly a vast blue ocean. It is projected that by 2025, the number of diabetes patients in China will surge to 320 million.
