A Tiny Lancet Is Becoming a Nightmare for the World’s 828 Million Diabetes Patients

On average, each patient with diabetes undergoes thousands of needle pricks annually, meaning they face pain approximately every five hours. Research from the University of Manchester in the UK has found that long-term, frequent blood sampling leads to digital nerve damage in 23% of patients. Furthermore, a survey by the American Diabetes Association revealed that patients’ reluctance toward blood sampling is a significant factor contributing to 31% of cases of failed glycemic control. More importantly, as there is currently no clinical cure for diabetes, early diagnosis, effective treatment, and continuous management are crucial for slowing disease progression and helping patients maintain an optimal quality of life.

Driven by demand, non-invasive monitoring technologies have emerged, bringing new hope to patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes.Nanjing Aibo Intelligent Medical Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Aibo Intelligence”) is a research and development-oriented enterprise centered on patients, specializing in the R&D of non-invasive monitoring devices and digital healthcare management and service platforms. Targeting chronic and specialized diseases such as diabetes, the company has independently developed a series of wearable medical-grade devices, including non-invasive blood glucose monitors, non-invasive uric acid monitors, and non-invasive blood lipid monitors. Furthermore, it has established diverse service solutions encompassing smart ward systems, smart community health initiatives, and home-based monitoring.

Partnering with Grade-A Tertiary Hospitals and Listed Companies to Build a Domestic Supply Chain

“The original intention behind founding Aibo Intelligence was to address the actual pain points of patients, with the hope of providing them with comprehensive, more convenient, and more comfortable medical monitoring methods and health management support,” Hu Min, Founder and General Manager of Aibo Intelligence, told VCBeat.

To gain a deeper understanding of patient needs and identify practical solutions, Hu Min led her team in conducting clinical research at tertiary hospitals. During the study, they found that frequent finger-prick blood sampling caused significant physical and psychological distress to patients with diabetes. Furthermore, while blood glucose monitoring plays a central role in diabetes management, traditional self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) suffers from data gaps. This makes it difficult for physicians to develop more scientific and effective personalized glycemic control plans based on continuous and precise trends in blood glucose changes, thereby severely compromising the overall effectiveness of diabetes management and patients' quality of life.

“Nocturnal hypoglycemia is a highly potentially dangerous health issue faced by patients with diabetes. In the endocrinology departments of hospitals, the rate of delayed treatment due to blind spots in nocturnal hypoglycemia monitoring is as high as 15%. This indicates that the risk of hypoglycemia cannot be detected in time during the period when patients need monitoring the most,” Hu Min added.

Based on in-depth research and precise insights into the needs of patients with diabetes, Aibo Intelligence joined forces with a large Grade-A tertiary hospital and the research team of the International Medical Research Institute at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine in 2019 to officially establish a project team, embarking on the development of non-invasive blood glucose monitoring technology and related products.

In 2020, Aibo Intelligence successfully launched its first non-invasive blood glucose monitoring smart bracelet. However, due to practical challenges such as supply chain management issues, technical bottlenecks, and the need for market education, the product’s market promotion failed to meet the team’s expectations. “During that period, we deeply felt the consequences of poor supply chain management and realized that only by firmly controlling the supply chain can we ensure product quality and market competitiveness,” Hu Min remarked with emotion.

Subsequently, Aibo swiftly adjusted its strategy, re-screened for high-quality partners, increased investment in R&D, optimized algorithms, and enhanced product performance.First, in terms of supply chain management, Aibo Intelligence has reached a deep cooperation agreement with Advantech, a leading manufacturer in the global intelligent systems industry. It has independently and successfully developed domestically produced sensor chips with high sensitivity and strong stability, ensuring the high performance and reliability of its products.

Secondly, in terms of data reserves, Aibo Intelligence actively collaborates with multiple Grade-A tertiary hospitals to acquire large volumes of high-quality clinical data. Meanwhile, it partners with health management companies to continuously collect home monitoring data from community residents and patients with chronic diseases. Throughout this process, Aibo Intelligence leverages its proprietary AI models to integrate and analyze massive datasets, continuously optimizing the models and significantly enhancing the accuracy of monitoring and early warning systems.

“Regarding market education, although most non-invasive blood glucose monitoring products currently available in the Chinese market are Class 3C electronic devices, they have objectively raised public awareness of non-invasive technologies. Meanwhile, the recognition and investment by major overseas players in non-invasive monitoring technology have further bolstered market confidence in these technologies, laying a cognitive foundation for Aibo Intelligence’s medical-grade non-invasive blood glucose monitoring products to enter the market in the future,” said Hu Min.

Specifically, the non-invasive glucose monitor developed by Aibo Intelligence employs a multimodal sensor array combining near-infrared spectroscopy, bioimpedance, and temperature sensing, while strictly adhering to medical-grade data encryption protocols to meet the rigorous requirements of clinical monitoring. As a wearable device, it comprehensively analyzes various health metrics—including blood glucose, heart rate, and blood pressure—alongside lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise, generating customized data reports that provide comprehensive support for users and healthcare professionals, thereby facilitating personalized health management. Furthermore, Aibo Intelligence has opened API interfaces at the application layer to enable seamless integration with third-party systems, allowing for future expansion into additional application scenarios.

Continuous monitoring across all hours and scenarios, with a data error rate far surpassing that of similar conceptual products.

Blood glucose monitoring results not only accurately assess the degree of glucose metabolism disorder in diabetic patients and intuitively reflect the efficacy of glucose-lowering treatments, but also serve as a critical basis for guiding subsequent adjustments to treatment plans. Therefore, terminal monitoring hardware is merely one component of the solution; more importantly, it is essential to build an integrated, full-ecosystem data closed loop that combines hardware, platforms, and services, thereby providing patients with comprehensive and continuous health management solutions.

To this end, Aibo Intelligence has launched a range of AI-driven, self-developed smart hardware products, including smart wristbands, smart patient gowns, and smart mattresses. Through seamless device interoperability, these solutions enable round-the-clock, all-scenario, real-time collection of 14 vital sign metrics, such as blood glucose and blood pressure.

Subsequently, the data collected by these wearable smart devices is transmitted in real time to the Smart Ward Remote Management Platform developed by Aibo Intelligence. This platform enables real-time monitoring and early warning of patients’ vital signs, reducing medical staff response time by 20%, significantly enhancing patient safety, and providing healthcare professionals with more precise decision support.

Leveraging the advantages of integrated hardware and software, Aibo Intelligence has established a closed-loop service spanning in-hospital monitoring, post-discharge follow-up, and home-based health management. This ensures that patients receive continuous and professional medical support and health management services at every stage of their care journey.

“During clinical validation at the Intensive Care Unit of a general hospital, Aibo’s intelligent monitoring devices demonstrated superior performance, with an error rate significantly lower than that of comparable products. Furthermore, supported by robust algorithms, the smart bracelet delivers increasingly accurate data as the duration of user wear extends. This solution is not only suitable for diabetic patients and high-risk groups but also provides daily health management services for the general healthy population, acting as a ‘family doctor’ to effectively mitigate potential health risks,” introduced Hu Min.

According to Hu Min, Aibo Intelligence is targeting registration for Class III medical devices and has planned two smart wristbands based on differentiated market demands. The integrated smart wristband offers a rich array of features, covering various health monitoring functions, with a price point around RMB 1,000 to meet the needs of users seeking multifunctionality. The basic model focuses on core functionalities, featuring a compact design and a lower price, better aligning with consumer demand for portable products.

Hu Min stated, “The quality of various health bands currently on the market is uneven, making it difficult to meet users’ demands for medical-grade health management. Against this backdrop, Aibo Intelligence, grounded in serious medical practice and leveraging its profound technological expertise and professional R&D team, has developed health management products that offer greater professionalism, precision, and reliability.”
