After weathering the setbacks faced by Chinese pharmaceutical companies in their overseas expansion in 2022, the past two years have marked a harvest period for Chinese innovative drugs going global. For China’s innovative drug industry as a whole, this represents a shift from a previous focus on license-in deals to a current emphasis on license-out transactions. Underpinning this change is the evolving role of Chinese innovative drug assets in the global market. According to data from Guosheng Securities,FromFrom 2019 to 2023, among domestic BD transaction assignees, the proportion of MNCs increased from 14% to 36%, while the share of overseas biotech companies also rose from 14% to 35%, nearly matching that of MNCs.For China’s innovative drug industry as a whole, the focus has shifted from predominantly license-in deals in the past to primarily license-out transactions today. Underlying this shift is the changing role of Chinese innovative drug assets in the global market.

Chinese innovative drug assets are not merely a “procurement” channel for overseas biotech firms; some have even helped these companies secure financing and stage a comeback. Chinese innovative drugs are now influencing the financing wave among U.S.-listed biotech firms.

Currently, multinational corporations (MNCs), US dollar funds, as well as domestic funds and local pharmaceutical companies, are actively exploring opportunities for overseas financing transactions!
