First Announcement: 2025 Clinical Training Program on Proton and Heavy Ion Medical Physics (Session I)

Jun 20, 2025 07:59 CST Updated 08:00

To All Medical Institutions and Relevant Practitioners:

China currently has only slightly more than 4,000 practicing medical physicists. However, based on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recommendation that at least one medical physicist should be available for every 200 patients undergoing radiotherapy, the country’s reasonable staffing requirement would reach approximately 12,000 medical physicists. This reveals a severe talent shortfall compared to the current workforce.

Particularly in the field of proton and heavy ion radiotherapy, based on an average requirement of 15 medical physicists per particle therapy center, approximately 200 new specialized medical physicists are needed annually. However, the growing discrepancy between the construction of particle therapy centers and the lagging supply of qualified professionals has become a key issue constraining the high-quality development of the industry.

To accelerate the implementation of the 14th Five-Year Plan for the Development of the Medical Equipment Industry and address the industry pain point wherein talent pipeline development lags behind the growth in equipment installations, the China Association of Medical Devices Industry, in collaboration with the Ion Medicine Center of the First Affiliated Hospital of USTC (Hefei Ion Medicine Center) and the Tsinghua Advanced Particle Industrial Innovation Platform, jointly organized the inaugural training course on clinical techniques in proton and heavy ion medical physics.

The relevant matters are hereby notified as follows:
