Currently, the core competitiveness of the global pharmaceutical industry has shifted from single-drug R&D innovation to a new stage of “Beyond the Pill” innovative solutions, with multinational corporations (MNCs) redefining their strategic boundaries and development paths.

Digital innovation in healthcare is characterized by its uniqueness and complexity, facing multiple intricate challenges such as stringent regulation, high risks, strong professional specialization, and data sensitivity. It is difficult for a single entity to bridge the entire chain from technological research and development to clinical implementation. Whether an efficient and collaborative ecosystem and mechanism for cross-sector integrated innovation involving “government, industry, academia, research, healthcare, and investment” can be established is the key determinant of the success or failure of smart healthcare innovation.

Pfizer has deeply engaged in this industrial transformation, leveraging its Pfizer Innovation Center (PIC) as a strategic hub. As one of the key initiatives to foster ecosystem collaboration and innovation within the Pfizer Innovation Center,On September 19–20, 2025 (Friday–Saturday), the 2nd Smart Healthcare Innovation Ecosystem Conference, hosted by Pfizer China, set sail once again in Qiantang, Hangzhou.Registration for the conference is now fully open. Pfizer Smart Healthcare Innovation Center focuses on four key areas: the design and development of innovative digital solutions, the delivery of professional medical content, the creation of innovative health models for patients and healthcare providers, and the incubation of ecosystem partnerships. By empowering healthcare services with advanced technologies, the Center is committed to becoming the leading smart healthcare innovation hub in China’s medical industry.

Over the past year, Pfizer Smart Healthcare Center has strived to develop an innovative collaborative mechanism to address the challenges of industrializing smart healthcare. By coordinating stakeholders across government, industry, academia, research, healthcare, and investment sectors, it has optimized the allocation of resources and capabilities, thereby facilitating the clinical implementation of innovative products and outcomes.

Within this innovation ecosystem, government bodies and regulatory agencies provide the policy and service support necessary for innovative development, while taking the lead in establishing regulatory frameworks for data sharing, privacy protection, and medical ethics to ensure that innovation advances steadily in compliance with regulations. Hospitals and clinical experts, serving as the source of demand and real-world application scenarios, are deeply involved in guiding the direction of innovation projects and conducting clinical validation of technical products, offering insights from real cases and recommendations for improvement. Universities and research institutes focus on breakthroughs and exploration in frontier technologies, providing scientific research support and technical prototypes, while cultivating interdisciplinary talent proficient in both medicine and digital technologies. Leveraging its profound understanding of clinical care settings, network advantages in medical resources, and capabilities in digital technology R&D, the Pfizer Smart Healthcare Innovation Center is responsible for transforming clinical needs and scientific advancements into implementable and scalable solutions.

The effectiveness of this model has been validated through the implementation of multiple benchmark projects at the Pfizer Smart Healthcare Innovation Center:

1Intelligent Breakthroughs in Clinical Drug Management

To address industry-wide challenges in the management of volume-based procurement (VBP) drugs, such as data lag and cumbersome processes, Pfizer Smart Healthcare Innovation Center, in collaboration with Pfizer China’s Hospital Acute Care Business Unit and the Ningbo International Science and Technology Innovation Center of Zhejiang University, has developed the V-Track system for scientific drug management and rational medication use. This system enables automated hospital demand reporting, intelligent departmental task allocation, and visualized usage tracking. It has currently benefited medical institutions at all levels across China, elevating drug management efficiency to new heights.

2Integrated Innovation in Specialty Disease Research and Clinical Practice

To address the challenges of insufficient specialist availability and inconsistent diagnostic and treatment standards in the field of migraine, Pfizer’s Smart Healthcare Innovation Center, as a member of Zhejiang Province’s “Jianbing Lingyan + X” R&D Breakthrough Program, has jointly developed the China Headache and Vertigo Digital Intelligence Management System (CHRS) in collaboration with Pfizer China’s Migraine Team, Zhejiang University Ningbo International Science and Technology Innovation Center, and Zhejiang University School of Medicine. The system is dedicated to supporting scientific research and clinical practice in migraine care. It aims to empower the entire “clinical practice-education-research” continuum through AI, enabling specialists nationwide to achieve precise diagnosis, standardized treatment, and efficient patient management, thereby fostering the long-term, high-quality development of migraine disciplines in China.

3Physician Empowerment and Digital Upgrade of Patient Services

Pfizer’s Smart Healthcare Innovation Center, in collaboration with Pfizer China’s Migraine Team, has launched China’s first digital platform for migraine physicians, “Migraine Academy,” and a patient-facing mini-program, “Say No to Migraine Pain.” By addressing both the physician and patient sides, it establishes a digital closed loop covering disease education, diagnostic support, and patient management, truly fulfilling its mission of “delivering breakthrough innovations that change patients’ lives.”

Cross-Industry Luminaries Converge in Qiantang to Co-Shape a New Ecosystem for Smart Healthcare

Pfizer’s Smart Healthcare Innovation Center owes its “Qiantang Practice” to Hangzhou, a fertile ground for innovation.

As the “No. 1 City for Digital Economy,” Hangzhou is home to tech giants such as Alibaba and Huawei, top-tier medical institutions including The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine (Zhejiang Provincial People’s Hospital) and The Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, as well as world-class universities like Zhejiang University. These assets provide a robust digital infrastructure, abundant clinical scenario resources, cutting-edge technical talent, and a proactive policy environment for innovation in medical digitalization. Qiantang District, the core area of Hangzhou’s biomedical industry, has gathered more than 1,700 life and health enterprises through institutional innovations centered on the “integration of six chains.”

Pfizer’s in-depth strategic alignment is resonating in sync with the city’s development. Since its establishment in late 2023, the Pfizer Smart Healthcare Innovation Center has actively leveraged its industry leadership to attract diverse innovative resources and capabilities to Qiantang, striving to explore collaborative research and co-creation with academic institutions and innovative enterprises, thereby building a regional innovation ecosystem for smart healthcare.
