From December 5 to 7, 2025, the 2025 Life Science Conference, themed “Integration of Medicine and Engineering to Support High-Quality Prevention and Control of Chronic Diseases,” was grandly held in Hangzhou. Guided by the Chinese Medical Association, the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, and the Division of Medical and Health Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and hosted by Zhejiang University, the conference aimed to respond to the “Healthy China 2030” strategy and the “Development Strategy for China’s Engineering and Technology in the Next 20 Years.” It sought to promote a shift from disease-centered care to health-centered care, accelerate the integration of biological, information, and medical technologies, and build an integrated system for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of chronic diseases.

2025 marks the concluding year of the 14th Five-Year Plan and the strategic planning phase for the 15th Five-Year Plan. The “Proposal of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China on Formulating the 15th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development” lists “a significant enhancement in the level of self-reliance and self-strengthening in science and technology” as a primary objective for economic and social development during the 15th Five-Year Plan period, and dedicates a specific chapter to deploying the strategic task of “accelerating high-level self-reliance and self-strengthening in science and technology to lead the development of new quality productive forces.” Held against this backdrop, the current conference thoroughly implements the spirit of the Fourth Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee, focusing on future trends in healthcare and life sciences, interdisciplinary development between medicine and engineering, and the clinical translation of scientific achievements. It aims to facilitate the establishment of top-tier talent and major projects in Zhejiang Province, thereby supporting the industrial upgrading of the regional life and health sector.
Global Wisdom Explores the Future of the Industry
The conference brought together top experts in the fields of life sciences and medical sciences, elites from the medical community, and leaders from numerous relevant departments from Canada, Beijing, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Henan, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and the Macao Special Administrative Region.
Centering on core themes such as frontier breakthroughs in life sciences, engineering technology innovation, IT-enabled empowerment, and the interdisciplinary integration of biotechnology with clinical medicine, the participants engaged in in-depth discussions. Drawing on domestic and international industry trends, they offered insights and recommendations on addressing the challenges of chronic disease prevention and control through medical-engineering convergence, and on accelerating the translation of innovative achievements into clinical applications. Their contributions helped chart a course for industry development and build consensus on advancing global life and health initiatives.
Major Events Unleash Innovation Vitality
At the opening ceremony, a series of authoritative and influential events were successfully held, including the Award Ceremony for the 12th Shulan Medical Prize, the 2025 SATOL · Awards for Leading Figures in Life Sciences Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the “Organ Protection China Tour 2025+,” and the Annual Science Talk Gala.
The 12th Shulan Medical Award Winners Announced: Academicians Cong Bin from the School of Forensic Medicine, Hebei Medical University; Ma Jun from the Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center; and Tian Jinzhou from Dongzhimen Hospital, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, Have Been Honored. Upholding the mission of “recognizing distinguished experts, nurturing emerging talents, and advancing education,” this award has become one of the most credible social-sector honors in China’s life sciences and technology field. Concurrently, the recipients of the “Shulan Medical Youth Award” and the “Shulan Excellence Project” were also announced, helping to cultivate new talent for the industry.

The 2025 SATOL Award Ceremony for Leading Figures in Life Sciences Innovation and Entrepreneurship was held concurrently, with ten outstanding scientists emerging as winners. As a branded competition that has been held for seven consecutive years, the event has become a key incubation platform driving innovation and entrepreneurship in life sciences. It continues to strengthen the innovation ecosystem in the field, facilitate breakthroughs in research translation and product development, and foster the emergence of high-quality innovative achievements and early-stage projects.
Furthermore, to serve the needs of public health and industrial development, and to promote deep integration among medicine, industry, and information technology, the Organ Transplantation Physicians Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, in conjunction with the National Liver Transplant Quality Control Center and other entities, has jointly launched the “Large Model for Diagnosis and Treatment in Organ Transplantation in the AI Era” project. This initiative aims to leverage advanced technologies, foster new quality productive forces, enable AI empowerment, and drive high-quality development in the industry.
Frontier Dialogues Illuminate Industry Directions
During the conference, dozens of leading experts in medical science and over a hundred young scientists shared the latest research achievements in life sciences through keynote speeches and roundtable discussions, exploring technical bottlenecks and solutions in the prevention and control of chronic diseases. From the perspective of interdisciplinary integration between medicine and engineering, they conducted an in-depth analysis of how to leverage technologies such as artificial intelligence and biomaterials to optimize diagnostic and therapeutic processes for chronic diseases, and to build a health management system covering the entire lifecycle, thereby providing intellectual support and practical pathways for industry development.
Conference Outcomes Empower the Long-Term Development of the Industry
The successful convening of this conference has not only established a high-end platform for global exchange and cooperation in life sciences and technology, but also deeply integrated the concept of medical-engineering convergence into the field of chronic disease prevention and control, laying a solid foundation for the high-quality development of the life sciences and technology industry during the 15th Five-Year Plan period.
As a key initiative for Zhejiang Province to implement the strategy of scientific and technological self-reliance and self-strengthening, the conference will accelerate the agglomeration of the regional life and health industry, promote the translation of innovative achievements into clinical applications, contribute to the realization of the Healthy China goals, and offer Chinese wisdom and strength to the global cause of human health.
