Currently, thanks to the rapid advancement of diagnostic and therapeutic technologies for hematologic malignancies and continuous breakthroughs in various novel therapies, an increasing number of patients are achieving long-term survival with the disease. This progress has also propelled previously refractory hematologic cancers, such as multiple myeloma, into an era of chronic disease management. To further respond to the call of the "Healthy China" initiative, address gaps in the comprehensive management of hematologic malignancies, and promote high-quality development in the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases, the Johnson & Johnson public welfare project focused on functional cures for hematologic malignancies has undergone a comprehensive upgrade.
“Decade of Commitment, Journey to Renewal”: 2026 Thematic Event on Functional Cure in Hematologic Malignancies Officially Launched
The upgraded project launches a comprehensive patient empowerment program. Building on the existing customized Baduanjin rehabilitation exercises, it introduces an exclusive "Flavor Exploration" initiative for patients with hematologic malignancies. In collaboration with hematology, nutrition, and nursing experts nationwide, the program leverages the culinary characteristics of China’s Eight Great Cuisines to create patient-friendly recipes tailored to balance taste preferences with daily nutritional needs. This establishes a holistic management system centered on clinical treatment, integrating physical rehabilitation with daily life support, thereby helping patients better manage their treatment journey, improve quality of life, and advance toward functional cure.
Professor Fu Chengcheng, Chief Physician, Department of Hematology, The First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University
Professor Fu Chengcheng, Chief Physician of the Department of Hematology at the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, stated that the treatment goal for multiple myeloma has evolved from “merely prolonging survival” to “achieving sustained deep remission and moving toward functional cure.” The newly diagnosed and first-relapse stages represent the “golden window” for multiple myeloma treatment. During this phase, standardized therapy that induces deeper remission and sustains it for a longer duration is essential to extending patient survival and improving quality of life. To successfully achieve “functional cure,” it is also necessary to enhance patients’ adaptability to the treatment process, thereby supporting their better adherence to long-term standardized therapy.
Baduanjin Rehabilitation Exercises Tailored for Patients with Hematologic Malignancies
Held in Xiamen and initiated by Johnson & Johnson with support from the People’s Good Doctor platform, this themed event attracted numerous patients with hematologic malignancies and their families. Addressing the widely concerned topic of rehabilitation management, Professor Fu Chengcheng emphasized that adherence to medical advice is the primary principle for patients undergoing long-term pharmacological treatment. Patients must consistently attend follow-up appointments and avoid arbitrary discontinuation of medication. Achieving deep and sustained remission relies on consensus and cooperation between healthcare providers and patients regarding treatment adherence and comprehensive disease management. “In clinical practice, we have found that enhancing patients’ physical fitness and cultivating their scientific disease management capabilities are as important as selecting high-quality therapeutic agents. Whether it is customized Baduanjin qigong exercises or nutritional meal plans tailored to regional dietary habits, these approaches are rooted in patients’ daily lives, easy to implement and popularize. They not only mobilize patients’ initiative but also effectively address the shortcomings of out-of-hospital rehabilitation management.”
Exclusive Flavor-Seeking Program for Patients with Hematologic Malignancies
According to reports, the project will be gradually implemented in key cities across China this year, continuously providing services such as disease education and wellness guidance, improving the whole-process management system for hematologic malignancies, combining traditional health preservation methods with modern disease management concepts, and accompanying patients on a “flavorful” journey of recovery.
