Sanofi Reports €34.46 Billion Revenue in 2018, Cuts 38 R&D Programs to Sharpen Focus on Oncology, Immunology, and Rare Diseases

French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi recently released its 2018 financial report, showing full-year net sales of €34.463 billion, a 2.5% increase compared to 2017. Among its business units, Sanofi Genzyme (rare diseases) reported sales of €7.226 billion, up 30.8%; Sanofi Pasteur (vaccines) recorded sales of €5.118 billion, up 2.4%; Consumer Healthcare (CHC) achieved sales of €4.66 billion, up 3.0%; and the Diabetes and Cardiovascular (DCV) unit posted sales of €4.511 billion, down 13.8%. Sales in emerging markets grew by 7.5%, with sales in the Chinese market increasing by 12.7%.

Sanofi CEO Olivier Brandicourt stated, “In 2018, we launched multiple drugs, including Dupixent, Libtayo, and Cablivi. Meanwhile, through the acquisitions of Bioverativ ($11.6 billion) and Ablynx ($4.8 billion), we laid a significant foundation for establishing a leading franchise in rare blood disorders and strengthening our bio-discovery capabilities. As we enter 2019, our focus remains on delivering business priorities and transforming Sanofi to address the evolving business dynamics facing our industry.”

In the performance report, another key highlight is the update on pipeline assets:

(1) As of February 2019, the company had 81 projects in its pipeline, including 33 new molecular entities and 48 for additional indication development.


(2) Over the next four years (2019–2022): Plan to submit applications for 9 new molecular entities and 25 additional indications.


(3) Terminate 38 R&D projects, focusing R&D efforts on oncology, immunology, and rare diseases. Of these 38 R&D projects, 13 were in the development stage and 25 were in the research stage.
