Medical Device Developer, Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Disease Management Solution Provider
VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) has learned that biotechnology company RTI Surgical (NASDAQ: RTIX) recently acquired medical device company Paradigm Spine and its Coflex device for lumbar spinal stenosis for $300 million. This acquisition will further drive RTI Surgical’s strategic transformation and expand its spine product portfolio.
Camille Farhat, President and Chief Executive Officer of RTI Surgical, stated, “In the second half of 2017, we began a strategic transformation, focusing on investing in diverse product types and scaling up our spine portfolio. The acquisition of Paradigm Spine represents a significant step in this transformation.”
Paradigm Spine, established in 2005, is a medical device company based in New York, USA, and a leader in the field of non-fusion spinal implant technology, focusing on developing implants for the spinal and orthopedic markets. The company's flagship product, Coflex, is an FDA-approved device for lumbar spinal stenosis. Made from medical-grade titanium alloy, it demonstrates significant efficacy in treating moderate to severe lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS), substantially reducing patients' surgical and hospitalization times while improving treatment outcomes.
RTI Surgical, founded in 1998, is the first publicly traded company in the United States to provide precision-processed implants and assembly technologies. It is committed to providing surgeons with safe, high-quality biological, metallic, and synthetic implants for use in surgical procedures such as sports medicine, general surgery, spine, orthopedics, and dentistry. The company employs proprietary sterilization technology to disinfect implants, resulting in a zero incidence rate of implant-related infections in patients. Headquartered in Florida, USA, RTI Surgical operates four manufacturing facilities across the United States and Europe, with business presence in nearly 50 countries worldwide.
Camille Farhat stated, “Coflex, developed by Paradigm Spine, can expand RTI Surgical’s existing spine product portfolio. Leveraging RTI Surgical’s expertise, team size, and infrastructure, along with the addition of key members from Paradigm Spine, we are confident in establishing Coflex as the standard of care for patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS).”
It is understood that lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is caused by abnormalities in the bony or fibrous tissues constituting the spinal canal, leading to a reduction in the effective capacity of the canal. This results in compression of the neural tissues within the canal and subsequent functional impairment, with primary symptoms including lumbosacral pain and intermittent claudication. The condition is most prevalent among men aged 40–50 years, and approximately 1.6 million people are diagnosed with LSS annually in the United States.
