On March 24, 2019, Johnson & Johnson Medical and Hainan Boao Super Hospital announced the joint establishment of the “Johnson & Johnson Advanced Technologies Hainan Boao Education Center” (hereinafter referred to as the “Education Center”). As the first incubation base for top-tier medical technology talent in the Hainan Boao Pilot Zone, the center is dedicated to introducing cutting-edge international medical technologies, building a systematic and sustainable training system and academic exchange platform, and cultivating a team of Chinese medical instructors and clinical professionals proficient in advanced medical technologies urgently needed in clinical practice, thereby providing patients with safer and more precise medical solutions.
Liu Qilong, Deputy Director of the Administrative Committee of Hainan Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone; Chen Weidong, Deputy Director of the Health Industry Division of the Hainan Provincial Health Commission; Ye Juzhen, Executive Vice President of Boao Super Hospital; Wang Guangwei, Vice President of Boao Super Hospital; Professor Yang Bing, Executive Deputy Director of the Department of Cardiology and Chief Physician of the Arrhythmia Diagnosis and Treatment Center at Shanghai East Hospital affiliated with Tongji University, as well as Doctoral Supervisor; Professor Fan Jie, Chief Physician and Doctoral Supervisor at the First People's Hospital of Yunnan Province; Professor Zheng Liangrong, Chief Physician and Doctoral Supervisor at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine; Wang Jinhe, General Manager of the Cardiovascular and Professional Solutions Business Unit at Johnson & Johnson (Shanghai) Medical Devices Co., Ltd.; and Chen Chuhui, Vice President of Operations and Education Solutions at Johnson & Johnson (Shanghai) Medical Devices Co., Ltd., attended the event.
Building a Closed-Loop Healthcare System in the Pilot Zone to Promote the Incubation of Medical Talent
As a model of diversified services and social engagement in the field of continuing medical education, the “Johnson & Johnson Advanced Technologies Hainan Boao Education Center” leverages the clinical application platform advantages of Boao Super Hospital, combined with Johnson & Johnson MedTech’s internationally leading capabilities in medical devices, technology, and education and training. It provides systematic training and academic exchange on cutting-edge medical technologies to the medical community, fostering the development of high-end medical talent in China.
At the inauguration ceremony, Liu Qilong, Deputy Director of the Administrative Committee of the Hainan Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone, stated, “The Education Center fills a gap in the training of medical professionals within the Pilot Zone and is of great significance for improving the healthcare systems of Boao and Hainan, as well as for accelerating the introduction of advanced international medical technologies, equipment, and products to Boao at ‘Boao Speed.’””
“Boao Super Hospital boasts first-class hardware facilities, disciplinary expertise, and management platforms in China, while Johnson & Johnson Medical possesses globally leading physician training experience and cutting-edge medical technologies. I believe that the talent incubation base created through this partnership will not only establish a closed-loop healthcare system in the Pilot Zone but also help improve the cultivation system for medical professionals in China, thereby promoting the continuous enhancement of medical standards in Hainan and across the country,” stated Ye Juzhen, Executive Deputy President of Boao Super Hospital.
Introducing Advanced International Technologies to Accelerate Innovation in China’s Healthcare Industry
Upon its establishment, the Education Center will leverage diverse and innovative medical training modalities—including surgical observation, remote digital live-streaming of surgeries, digital surgical simulation, and human patient simulator operating systems—as well as international academic exchanges, to promptly introduce cutting-edge international medical technological innovations and concepts. It will also promote application practices and discussions aligned with international standards, while making comprehensive preparations for the full introduction and implementation of new medical technologies, equipment, and products in China.
“Supported by the favorable policies of the ‘Nine National Measures,’ Johnson & Johnson MedTech has successfully synchronized the deployment of its cutting-edge industry technologies in China. With the inauguration of the Education Center today, more urgently needed clinical medical technological achievements—such as ‘green electrophysiology technology,’ which represents current trends in medical development—can be integrated into medical education and practical application through this institution, super hospitals, and the Pilot Zone. This will provide more precise medical solutions for patients and healthcare providers in China, and contribute significantly to medical innovation in China and the realization of the ‘Healthy China 2030’ vision,” said Chen Chuhui, Vice President of Operations and Education Solutions at Johnson & Johnson (Shanghai) Medical Devices Co., Ltd.。
“As public health needs evolve and the Healthy China initiative advances in depth, it is imperative to cultivate a large cohort of outstanding physicians who are well-versed in international innovative medical concepts and technologies.” Professor Fan Jie pointed out, “The joint establishment of a medical education base by Boao Super Hospital and Johnson & Johnson Medical enables Chinese physicians to access, learn from, and exchange insights on cutting-edge global medical technological innovations in real time, thereby better serving Chinese patients. This is a tangible measure that benefits both healthcare providers and patients.”
Inaugural Education and Training Program Launched: Green Electrophysiology Technology Enters China
The inaugural training course following the establishment of the Education Center was jointly observed by online electrophysiologists under the leadership of Professor Yang Bing, Professor Fan Jie, and Professor Zheng Liangrong. The course demonstrated the application of Johnson & Johnson’s cutting-edge technologies in cardiac electrophysiology procedures, such as those for atrial fibrillation.
“Leveraging the benefits of the ‘Nine National Measures,’ the training featured three Johnson & Johnson medical products that represent international innovations in green electrophysiology: SOUNDSTAR®, DECA NAV®, and the CARTO VIZIGO™ system—a fully 3D visualized magnetic-electric dual-location surgical technology first applied at a super hospital three months ago. We hope that these internationally leading technologies, which have not yet been approved in China, can be rapidly promoted nationwide with the support of national policies. By combining cutting-edge international technologies with the exceptional professional expertise of Chinese physicians, we aim to benefit the vast population of cardiovascular patients in China,” stated Professor Yang Bing, who performed China’s first fully visualized magnetic-electric dual-location cardiac surgery.
SOUNDSTAR Used in Training® Three-dimensional intracardiac echocardiography catheters, known as the physician’s “fluoroscopic eye,” are currently the world’s ultra-slim intracardiac ultrasound catheters. They can replace traditional methods of simulating internal cardiac structures, comprehensively capturing internal cardiac tissue architecture through an access site with a diameter of only 8 French (8F), and assisting in the generation of four-chamber cardiac images. DECA NAV®These are referred to as “flexible micro-catheters,” capable of multi-angle torsion to help operators access complex cardiac structures. “The three technologies employed by Johnson & Johnson Medical represent not only industry innovations but also the forefront of green electrophysiology trends. They significantly reduce physicians’ reliance on fluoroscopy during traditional procedures, thereby minimizing radiation exposure for both doctors and patients, reducing collateral damage associated with surgery, shortening procedural time, and enhancing overall safety,” pointed out Professor Zheng Liangrong after the training session.
In the future, the Johnson & Johnson Advanced Technologies Hainan Boao Education Center will further leverage its platform advantages in medical talent development and the introduction of cutting-edge technologies, supporting the Chinese medical community in aligning with international standards in technology, talent, and medical practice in real time. This will meet the demand of Chinese patients and healthcare providers for advanced medical solutions and create greater value for the construction of China’s healthcare system and the advancement of medical standards.
