Illumina and PerkinElmer Collaborate to Develop Metagenomic Sequencing WorkflowRecently, genomics giant Illumina announced that it has partnered with PerkinElmer to develop a metagenomic sequencing workflow. This workflow combines Illumina’s Nextera DNA Flex Library Prep Kit with PerkinElmer’s automation solutions, enabling DNA extraction and sequencing directly from samples without the need for bacterial culture.

Mitu Chaudhary, Product Management and Library Preparation Solutions Manager at Illumina, Inc., stated in a press release that the workflow is designed to “significantly improve the discovery of microbiome-associated diseases.”
Mark Dupal, Global Portfolio Director of PerkinElmer’s Applied Genomics Division, added, “Automation will enhance laboratory efficiency, reduce labor costs, and generate consistent, high-quality data.”
In addition, according to a filing submitted by Illumina to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday, Illumina also amended its supply services agreement with Foundation Medicine, a global leader in molecular information, and extended the term of the agreement to June 6, 2023.
Under the agreement, Illumina will provide sequencing systems, reagents, other consumables, and service contracts for instrument maintenance to Foundation Medicine and its German subsidiary. Foundation Medicine has committed to purchasing a specified quantity of reagents and other consumables every six months. The prices for the sequencing systems and service contracts will be based on Illumina’s list prices, while reagents and consumables will be traded at fixed prices.
