VCBeat (WeChat Official Account: vcbeat) has learned that Atia Vision, a medical device company under the Silicon Valley healthcare innovation incubator Shifamed, recently announced the completion of a $20 million Series D preferred equity financing round. The round was led by Cormorant Asset Management, with participation from The Capital Partnership (TCP), AMED Ventures, and Shangbay Capital.

It is reported that Atia Vision will use the proceeds from this round of financing to advance the clinical development of a novel intraocular lens. Previously, Atia Vision completed a $3 million Series B financing in 2015 and a $10 million Series C financing in 2018.

Atia Vision is a medical device company focused on the field of ophthalmology. The Atia Vision team improves patient outcomes by developing safe and controllable presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses (IOLs), with the aim of restoring comprehensive functional vision for cataract patients.

Globally, nearly 67 million people suffer from vision impairment due to lens opacification caused by cataracts, which can lead to blindness if not treated promptly. Cataract surgery involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). Current treatment options have certain limitations in visual restoration, such as side effects including glare and halos. Atia Vision’s modular intraocular lens technology features an accommodating base that allows free control of the ciliary muscle, simulating the eye’s natural mechanism, along with fixed lens elements, helping patients restore vision from distance to near.

Mariam Maghribi, President and CEO of Atia Vision, stated, “With the support of this new round of financing, we look forward to further advancing clinical studies and demonstrating the performance of our technology, with the aim of comprehensively restoring functional vision for patients suffering from cataracts and presbyopia.”

“Strengthening the partnership with Atia Vision can provide next-generation solutions for the ophthalmic market,” commented Bihua Chen, Founder and CEO of Cormorant Asset Management. “Atia Vision’s leading technology uniquely addresses the clinical challenges currently faced in the field of visual impairment, where cataracts and presbyopia represent the two largest market segments.”
