Drug Discovery Platform

Among proteins, less than 15% are considered druggable. Undoubtedly, if targeting RNA for drug development proves successful, it will bring about a new transformation in new drug research and development, representing a vast space and carrying great expectations. In recent years, more than ten startups have emerged, primarily based in Boston, dedicating themselves to the development of RNA-targeted drugs.

Among these, Skyhawk Therapeutics stands out. Founded in 2016, the company secured $40 million in financing in June 2018 and subsequently entered into strategic collaborations with Celgene and Biogen, receiving upfront payments totaling over $100 million. Among major pharmaceutical companies, Roche and Novartis are both actively conducting Phase II clinical trials for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) treatments and have reported promising interim data.

Panorama Medicine was established in this context. Founded in 2018, the company focuses on the research and development of RNA modulation-related therapeutics. Rather than emulating or even approximating the business models of existing companies, Panorama Medicine has carved out a unique path by integrating genomics, big data, and artificial intelligence to concentrate on the field of RNA defect-related diseases, thereby advancing the development of targeted RNA therapies.

Panorama’s two scientific co-founders, Professor Yi Xing and Professor Douglas Black, have dedicated many years to the field of RNA. Professor Xing is the Founding Director of the Center for Computational and Genomic Medicine at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he developed a series of core algorithms and computational tools for high-throughput RNA data analysis that are widely used. Professor Black, former President of the RNA Society, has conducted pioneering work in the area of gene regulation at the RNA level as it relates to human diseases. Together, they form a powerful synergy in their respective areas of expertise.

Panorama has recently appointed Professor Beverly Davidson, a gene therapy expert, as its scientific advisor. She was just elected Vice Chair and President-Elect of the American Society of Gene & Cell Therapy.

Zhu Mingfu, PhD, another co-founder and CEO of Panorama Medicine, has held senior management positions at multiple leading biotechnology companies in the United States and China, possessing extensive industry experience and a broad perspective. The uniqueness of the company’s technology lies in its effective utilization of the team’s specialized expertise accumulated over many years in this field, applying it to the validation of disease targets and the screening of drug targets.

The company is dedicated to developing therapeutics for RNA defect-related diseases. RNA abnormality-associated disorders constitute a significant proportion of genetic and complex diseases, creating an urgent need for effective treatment options. Every step forward the company takes contributes to the broader effort to conquer human disease, embodying the principle that great achievements are built upon small, consistent strides.

The company has already established an automated experimental platform, and the screening of drug targets is currently underway in full swing. The company has obtained licenses for certain core software and completed the development of a comprehensive data analysis platform. Headquartered in Philadelphia, adjacent to numerous major pharmaceutical companies, the location is highly conducive to expanding business collaborations. We will be pleased to provide further updates once we achieve breakthrough results.

Investor Perspectives:

Jimmy Lu, Managing Director of WI Harper Group and Director of Panorama Medicine, commented, “We are honored to serve as the lead investor in Panorama Medicine and have strong confidence in its team and technology. The two founders have dedicated over a decade to collaborating in the RNA field, demonstrating technical complementarity and seamless teamwork. We look forward to rapid progress by Panorama Medicine in AI-driven drug development, delivering novel therapeutics for rare and complex diseases.”
