Gilead Sciences Announces Appointment of Christi Shaw as CEO of Subsidiary Kite Pharma, Joining Gilead’s Senior Leadership Team
Christi Shaw currently serves as Senior Vice President and President of Lilly Biopharmaceuticals at Eli Lilly and Company, another multinational pharmaceutical company. Earlier on the same day, Eli Lilly announced that Christi Shaw will step down from her current position at the end of August, and Patrik Jonsson, President and General Manager of Eli Lilly Japan, will be promoted to succeed her.
Coincidentally, both individuals began their careers as pharmaceutical sales representatives at Eli Lilly.
Eli Lilly and Company announced the departure of Christi Shaw, as well as the retirement of Senior Vice President and General Counsel Mike Harrington at the end of the year; a successor is currently being sought.
Below is an introduction to Christi Shaw and her successor, Patrik Jonsson.
Christi Shaw began her career as a pharmaceutical sales representative at Eli Lilly and Company in the United States. After more than a decade of dedication, she advanced to the position of Regional Sales Director. She later left Eli Lilly to hold management roles at Johnson & Johnson, including at its subsidiaries Janssen Pharmaceuticals and Ethicon. Subsequently, she served as Head of Oncology Business for North America and President of the Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation at Novartis. However, in May 2016, she resigned from this high-profile role to care for her sister, who was suffering from multiple myeloma.
Subsequently, in April 2017, she returned to Eli Lilly and Company as President of Lilly Bio-Medicines. Over the next two years, the Bio-Medicines division led by Christi Shaw launched multiple new drugs globally, including Olumiant (baricitinib), a novel JAK inhibitor for rheumatoid arthritis, and Emgality, a new treatment for migraine. The division also supported the market growth of Taltz (ixekizumab), Eli Lilly’s blockbuster drug for psoriasis, and expanded its pipeline with several additional development projects.
Patrik Jonsson, Christi Shaw’s successor, currently serves as President and General Manager of Eli Lilly Japan. He joined Eli Lilly Sweden in 1990 after graduating from Lund University in Sweden, initially working as a pharmaceutical sales representative. Two years later, he became an Assistant Marketing Manager for anti-infective drugs, and subsequently advanced through various roles, including Product Manager, Marketing Manager, and Marketing Director.
In 2008, Patrik Jonsson was appointed General Manager of Eli Lilly Italy, with his remit subsequently expanded to include Central and Eastern Europe. In 2014, he was appointed President and General Manager of Eli Lilly Japan K.K.
Returning to Gilead Sciences, this is a company undergoing transformation. Followers of MRCLUB are aware that Gilead Sciences also experienced leadership changes this year. Christi Shaw is not the only new face; Daniel O’Day, who assumed the roles of Chairman and CEO on March 1, previously served as the CEO of Roche Pharmaceuticals (see MRCLUB’s historical updates: “General Manager of Abbott’s EPD China Division Steps Down; Roche’s Global CEO to Join Gilead”).
In late May, Gilead Sciences announced the appointment of Johanna Mercier, former President of Global Commercial Operations for the U.S. and Major Markets (France, Germany, Japan) at Bristol Myers Squibb, as Chief Commercial Officer (see MRCLUB historical message: BMS Commercial Executive Joins Gilead Sciences as Chief Commercial Officer).
Earlier this year, Gilead also disclosed a series of changes in its senior leadership. These included the resignation of Alessandro Riva, Executive Vice President and Head of Oncology and Cell Therapy at Gilead Sciences, who left in mid-March to join Glenmark, as well as the announcement that Chief Financial Officer Robin Washington will retire in March next year.
Gilead Appoints Christi Shaw as CEO of Kite Pharma; Gilead Sciences CEO Daniel O’Day Believes Her Extensive Leadership Experience in Complex Therapeutic Areas, Particularly Oncology, Is an Ideal Fit for Kite Pharma and Will Enable Gilead to Consolidate Its Leadership Position in Cell Therapy
For Daniel O'Day, the only missing piece is a CFO.
