Fuzhou, September 16 (CNS) – Reporters learned on the 16th from the Fujian Provincial Drug Administration that Xiamen Innovax Biotech Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Xiamen Innovax) recently signed an agreement with GlaxoSmithKline PLC. to collaborate on the development and commercialization of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines (i.e., cervical cancer vaccines) featuring next-generation specialized adjuvant systems.

This collaboration aims to jointly develop a new HPV vaccine by leveraging GlaxoSmithKline’s proprietary AS04 adjuvant system and the antigen technology developed by INNOVAX. This also marks GlaxoSmithKline’s partnership with a Chinese enterprise to co-develop and commercialize the vaccine.

Cervical cancer is a public health issue that poses a serious threat to women’s health worldwide, primarily caused by persistent infection with high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV). Relevant data indicate that in 2018, an estimated 570,000 new cases of cervical cancer were diagnosed globally, and more than 310,000 women died from the disease. Practice has demonstrated that vaccination against HPV is a direct and effective measure for preventing cervical cancer.

Under the agreement signed by both parties, Xiamen Innovax will construct new vaccine production lines compliant with the standards of China, the United States, the European Union, and the World Health Organization (WHO), and supply multiple types of HPV vaccine antigens to GlaxoSmithKline. GlaxoSmithKline will combine these antigens with its proprietary AS04 adjuvant to develop new HPV vaccines and commercialize them globally, including in Europe and the United States. This collaboration does not restrict Xiamen Innovax from developing its own HPV vaccines, and Xiamen Innovax will also obtain exclusive distribution rights for the new vaccine in China and certain other countries.

The Fujian Provincial Medical Products Administration stated that by establishing a strategic partnership, both parties will achieve complementary advantages, accelerate the development of new HPV vaccines, and the process will also help enhance INNOVAX's international scientific research level and core competitiveness.
