Arterial New Medicine (WeChat ID: biobeat1) learned from foreign media that GlobalData has compiled a new ranking of the top 20 pharmaceutical companies based on their market capitalization in Q1 2019. In the new ranking, the top ten pharmaceutical companies remain unchanged, with Johnson & Johnson still leading at $372.2 billion. However, there have been significant changes in the rankings of companies placed 11th to 20th. After acquiring Shire for $62 billion, Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited has jumped to 16th place, with its market capitalization reaching $63.4 billion, an increase of 141%. However, due to overall market performance, many pharmaceutical companies' stock prices did not perform well in the six months following March. For example, Takeda's market capitalization has now dropped to $53.5 billion.
As Takeda entered the ranking, another company dropped out. Biogen suffered a sharp plunge in its stock price and saw its market capitalization shrink by $41 billion after two Phase III clinical trials of its new Alzheimer’s drug, aducanumab, failed.
