Gilead Sciences Announces Appointment of Merdad Parsey, M.D., as Global Chief Medical Officer, Effective November 1
Dr. Parsey will lead the company’s global clinical development and medical affairs teams, becoming a member of the global senior management team and reporting directly to Daniel O’Day, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Gilead Sciences. Under the new organizational structure, Dr. William Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Drug Research at Gilead Sciences, will also report to Mr. O’Day.
Dr. Parsey currently serves as Senior Vice President of Early Clinical Development at Genentech, a member of the Roche Group, overseeing departments including clinical development, quality, compliance, informatics, and clinical operations. His appointment will bring highly valuable clinical research experience and expertise to Gilead Sciences across a broad range of therapeutic areas, including inflammatory diseases, oncology, and infectious diseases.

Prior to joining Genentech, Dr. Parsey served as President and Chief Executive Officer of 3-V Biosciences. He has also engaged in drug development at Sepracor, Regeneron, and Merck, and held the positions of Assistant Professor of Medicine and Director of Critical Care Medicine at New York University School of Medicine. Dr. Parsey earned his M.D. from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, completed his internal medicine residency at Stanford University, and pursued fellowship training in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Colorado.
