TOKYO, Oct. 15, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Eisai Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Tokyo, CEO: Haruo Naito, “Eisai”) and FRONTEO, Inc. (Headquarters: Tokyo, CEO: Masahiro Morimoto, “FRONTEO”) recently announced that they launched Coroban®, a fall prediction system, to medical institutions in Japan on September 26, 2019. Coroban® predicts the risk of falls among hospitalized patients in advance and displays alerts.
By launching anti-osteoporosis agents and insomnia treatment drugs, Eisai recognizes the critical importance of fall and drop prevention measures in healthcare institutions. Meanwhile, FRONTEO Healthcare, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of FRONTEO, is a data analytics company specializing in healthcare. It initially developed an artificial intelligence (AI) system based on natural language processing technology, known as Concept Encoder®.
Eisai and FRONTEO have been jointly developing Coroban since January 2018. By leveraging Eisai’s network with medical institutions, Coroban has been provisionally introduced at several healthcare facilities in Japan, where it has undergone iterative improvements based on clinical needs, culminating in its launch at this press conference.
According to a survey by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the number of hospitalized patients aged 65 and older in Japan increased to approximately 960,000 in 2017, highlighting the growing importance of fall prevention and care in medical institutions. Coroban learns from the past nursing records of hospitalized patients at each medical institution. Based on these historical records, it scores each patient’s risk of slips and falls using daily nursing records and displays information on patients with higher risks. The application of Coroban is expected to reduce the burden on healthcare professionals and ensure consistent and objective risk assessments by incorporating individual slip and fall risk data into personalized care and nursing plans.
By launching Coroban, Eisai and Fronteo aim to contribute to the well-being of patients and their families by supporting the establishment of a ward care system that reduces the risk of falls among hospitalized patients.
