The 2019 China Medical and Pharmaceutical Digital Innovation Summit, hosted by ECV Shanghai Xiwei, was held in Shanghai on October 17-18. Centered on the core theme of "Digital Innovation in Healthcare," the summit featured industry leaders such as Fosun Pharmaceutical, Takeda Pharmaceutical, Novartis, Roche Diagnostics, and AstraZeneca, who attended the forum to share their explorations into digital innovation within pharmaceutical enterprises.

Spanning two days, the event centered on AI-driven healthcare innovation and the digital transformation of pharmaceutical companies’ mindsets, fostering digital innovation across entire business processes. Core topics included exploring innovative approaches and management strategies within the pharmaceutical industry through the lens of patient flow. The agenda featured 19 keynote speeches and one panel discussion. More than 20 Fortune Global 500 pharmaceutical and healthcare companies at the forefront of digital transformation shared their latest insights on digital strategy, implementation pathways for digital marketing, and cutting-edge marketing practices.

Strategy and Implementation of Digital Factories


A head of Roche Diagnostics’ business support stated that within the overall digital landscape, the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector remains relatively lagging. Digital reference models from international consulting firms lack practical experience covering the complete value chain and processes specific to pharmaceutical production. While the rationale for digital transformation is clear, questions regarding implementation—how to execute it and where to begin—remain unresolved. The Electronic Command Center serves not only as an electronic dashboard for production performance but also acts as a technological driver for lean production within the digitalization initiative.

The Marketing Planning Director of Tencent Health Industry stated that the co-creation of health content not only helps media outlets provide more valuable news to the public, but also enables pharmaceutical companies to better communicate their brand’s unique value or the correct usage of their products, while empowering consumers with greater access to information on disease prevention and treatment. In the era of “Big Health,” only by leveraging data-driven strategies to enhance communication efficiency, using educational content to raise health awareness, and driving conversion across diverse scenarios through interactive innovation can true digital health marketing be achieved.

Intelligent Multi-Channel Marketing in the Era of Big Data


Veeva’s China CRM Strategy Manager stated that Veeva provides pharmaceutical industry-related services covering the entire lifecycle from R&D to sales and pharmacovigilance. Adopting a SaaS platform not only enhances operational efficiency but has also become imperative in the context of digital transformation. Although the healthcare sector faces high entry barriers and has lagged behind other industries in digital transformation, the current trend is beginning to reshape this traditionally resistant market.

During the forum discussion, a partner from L.E.K. Consulting, the Head of Commercial Innovation at Merck & Co., the Head of the Big Data and AI Technology Team within AstraZeneca’s Digital and Commercial Innovation Department, the Head of Data Management at GlaxoSmithKline, and an Executive Director of Shanghai Junshi Biosciences shared insights on “How to Drive Digital Innovation Across the Entire Pharmaceutical Business Process.”
