Guangzhou International Bioisland to Establish a Talent Development Base for Biopharmaceuticals. On November 27, GE Healthcare’s Life Sciences Division signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Huangpu District of Guangzhou and Guangzhou Development District.

The two parties will jointly invest $10 million to establish a biomedical talent training base—the Guangzhou Institute of Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing Technology—on the Guangzhou International Bio Island. By providing talent training services that comply with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards, the institute plans to train over 1,000 applied biomedical professionals annually.

It is reported that the college will offer training on the latest production technologies and process workflows for biologic macromolecule drugs based on single-use technology platforms, addressing the critical shortage of talent in biopharmaceutical enterprises within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and enhancing the international competitiveness of the region’s biomedical industry.

As the first training base in South China dedicated to cultivating talent for the downstream production of biopharmaceuticals, the College will focus on developing application-oriented professionals for the commercialization and industrialization stages of biopharmaceutical enterprises.

Construction of the academy has officially commenced, with operations expected to begin in September 2020, providing training for over 1,000 participants annually. In the future, the academy will also engage in academic collaborations with universities in Guangdong to develop biomanufacturing curricula for future talent that integrate theoretical knowledge with practical instruction, thereby facilitating the transformation of students into application-oriented professionals.

Emmanuel Ligner, President and CEO of GE HealthCare’s Life Sciences division, stated that Guangdong is one of the strategic hubs for the development of China’s biopharmaceutical industry and serves as GE’s strategic base in southern China and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The collaboration with Guangzhou Development District on talent cultivation in the biopharmaceutical sector further demonstrates our continued investment in the Chinese market and our comprehensive support for the growth of China’s biopharmaceutical industry.
